 | | The Slash Report  ~  April 2014      |
 |

"HE IS RISEN!"     On Feb. 27, 2015 it will be 24 years since Ruth Dillow received a very sad message from the Pentagon. It stated that her son, Clayton Carpenter, Private 1st Class, had stepped on a mine in Kuwait and was dead. A casualty of Operation Desert Storm.   Ruth Dillow later wrote, "I can't begin to describe my grief and shock. It was almost more than I could bear. For 3 days I wept. For 3 days I expressed anger and loss. For 3 days people tried to comfort me, to no avail because the loss was too great."   But 3 days after she received that message, the telephone rang. "Mom, it's me. I'm alive." Ruth Dillow said, "I couldn't believe it at first. But then I recognized his voice, and he really was alive." The message she had received was all a mistake!   She said, "I laughed, I cried, I felt like turning cartwheels, because my son whom I had thought was dead, was really alive. I'm sure none of you can even begin to understand how I felt."   Perhaps not, but this month as we celebrate Easter we hear the story of Jesus' first disciples and followers who experienced the same emotions themselves. One day they watched their best friend and teacher being nailed to a cross. They witnessed His pain as He cried out, "I thirst!" and "My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?"   They listened as finally He bowed His head and said, "It is finished!" and "Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit." They watched as His body was taken from the cross and placed in a tomb. All their hopes and dreams were lying behind that stone.    For 3 days they mourned and then on "the first day of the week, early in the morning," the scripture says, some women made their way along the path that led to His tomb.  They were looking for someone to roll away the stone so they could tend to Jesus' body.   But they found that the stone had already been rolled away. And an angel said to them, "You're looking in the wrong place. You're looking for Jesus among the dead. He is not dead. He is alive. He is risen, even as He said!"   "He is risen!" That is what we celebrate on Easter. When we read the accounts of the eyewitnesses and we hear the testimony of those who encountered the risen Christ, we're convinced that Jesus is alive. He is risen from the dead, and what a difference His resurrection has made in all our lives!   Come and join us at Slash Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) as we celebrate Jesus' gift of everlasting life. You are invited to come and take part in our Lenten observance and all the events leading up to Easter. "Christ is Risen, indeed!"   En Agape',   |

A Global Ministry Conversation at Slash Church with Disciple Missionaries Tuesday, April 8th, 7:30 pm in the Sanctuary With Dr. Anil & Teresa Henry from the Christian Hospital in Mungeli, India     This will be a great opportunity for you to learn more about how your Outreach dollars help change the world in wonderful ways.  Last summer our Vacation Bible School children supported the hospital and school with gifts for new computers.  A portion of our regular outreach dollars to Disciple Mission Fund also support the work of the Christian Hospital in Mungeli, India. Join us for this great event and you will hear these missionaries interpret our churches' participation in God's mission, which is made possible by Disciples Mission Fund and Our Church's Wider Mission.        Our speakers will be Dr. Anil Henry who has served with Global Ministries for 11 years and Teresa Henry has served 7 years with Global Ministries.  Anil and Teresa serve with the Synodical Board of Health Services of the Church of North India.  Anil serves as a surgeon and is the Director at Christian Hospital, Mungeli and Teresa is an anesthesiologist.  The Common Global Ministries Board of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ both support their work.
We will be hosting the Henry's overnight while they are here and would like to ask if anyone from Slash could provide overnight lodging.  Please contact Rev. Michael if you can host.     Return to top   |

 | The time is near for us as sisters and brothers of the Christian Church in Virginia to gather at Lynchburg College for fun, fellowship, learning, worship, renewing friendships and making new ones. This year the Reverend Dr. Sharon Watkins is our keynote speaker, along with Jon and Dawn Barnes, representing the Division of Overseas Ministries and Week of Compassion.
Using the theme of Mission: Possible, we will focus on being a missional church and a mission-oriented people. I have seen what mission-oriented people can accomplish here and to the ends of the earth and pray that our churches in Virginia will capture a vision of possibility through this Assembly. I look forward to having a chance to celebrate together as those called by Jesus Christ to reach out to the world.   Let us celebrate what God has done for us and what we can do for God and god's people as the 171st gathering of the Christian Church in Virginia. Y'all come. See you there! ~Lee   |
