Be your best in 2013 Build Healthier Habits Starting Today!
|
We often look at a new year as a fresh start, but as much as we may want it to, change doesn't happen overnight. A proven strategy for success is to make a plan, break it into achievable chunks and early wins, and then commit to it! However, if you feel that making a plan is just too hard (and many of us do), why not at least start 2013 by looking at your lifestyle and how you can build healthier habits -- starting today! Small changes create momentum and the motivation to make bigger changes down the road. So, how can you make small changes in your life? Visit the Peter Gilgan Family YMCA and talk to our Wellness Centre staff, review your routine or try a new class. Not a member - no problem! Try out one of our registered programs. Read our full article here, and stay tuned for more articles and tips from YMCA experts like Lucy (see Best Fitness Tips for 2013) coming soon on how to make this your best year yet! Best Fitness Tips for 2013 Maintain your fitness routine -- at home or away!
|
Many people have a hard time staying motivated to work out in the winter, or if they're going away on vacation. It's so easy to fall off a routine, and so hard to get back on it. Lucy Cerantola, one of our YMCA fitness experts, shares some of her best tips for staying on routine, no matter where you are! Kick up your metabolismTry two to four body weight exercises at 12-20 repetitions, one after the other. Then, repeat 2-5 times! - Push-ups - This common exercise can be done a variety of ways such as on your toes, on your knees, on an incline with hands on a bench or a wall.
- Squats - Try Prisoner Squats by standing with your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart and lace your fingers behind your head or add a jump from the squat position, land softly and sink back down to do your next repetition.
- Chin-up/Pull-up - Use a bar, but if you don't have one, work your back by doing towel pulls with a partner.
- Side Bridge - Lift your hip with knees or feet on the ground. Hold for 30-60 secs, or drop and raise your hips for 10-20 repetitions for a more challenging set.
Pick an amount of time you're willing to tackle, even if it's just five minutes. Work your way up to 15 minutes, then 30 minutes and higher. Start small, keep doing it and you'll be glad you did!

Be kind to our environment
| | Colder weather is here! With colder weather here, please remember that the front entrance of our building is a fire route zone and is intended for drop-off and pick-up only.
NO IDLING PLEASE! An idling car can produce as much pollution as a moving car. Please join us in trying to do our part for the environment by not idling your car. Better yet, why not come in from the cold, grab a coffee or hot beverage and warm up?
