Religious Diversity Journeys Creates Comfort Quilts
 | |

When a child is taken into the foster care system, they often leave with no personal belongings, nothing to hold onto that is their own. In moments of loss, fear or displacement, each of us can relate to the comfort of something familiar. The Linus Project is a national non-profit that works to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer "blanketeers." |

IFLC Volunteer Teri Weingarden  Joins WISDOM Board
 | |

West Bloomfield Treasurer, IFLC Community Building Committee member, and newly appointed WISDOM board member Teri Weingarden could have coined the slogan "Think globally. Act locally."
"Most people don't realize how important local politics are and how much power members of township boards have to make decisions that affect the community," says Weingarden. "The local politics is what affects you on a day to day basis." |

The word guru, which means teacher, is a compound of the words "gu," which means dark, and "ru," which means light. "Sikh" means disciple or student. And the guru takes that student from darkness into light.
On Wednesday, April 27, the Exploring Our Religious Landscapes participants got to be the students at the Gurdwara Sahib Ji Mata Tripta in Plymouth. We learned about Sikhism's 15th century beginnings in the Punjab region of India, and the ten gurus, starting with Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, and ending with the Sikh scriptures, the Guru Granth Sahib, which is considered the eternal living guru. We learned about philosophy, theology, and ritual. And we got to enjoy the ritual of langar, the traditional Sikh communal meal.
