Flood Recovery Group video
Flood Recovery Group video

Many of our IFLC friends remember well the floods of August 2014. It was the first full day of our NAIN conference, and as the skies opened up with historic rains, the streets and freeways rapidly flooded, stranding many of our conference guests as they struggled to make their way home from dinner. No doubt many of them arrived home to find another unwelcome sight - - flooded basements and spoiled belongings. While these are just memories for most of us, there are thousands of Detroit families who are still living with the consequences of the floods. More than half of the hundred and 130,000 Detroit area homes affected by the floods were deemed ineligible for help from FEMA. Thousands received no assistance from any state or private insurance, and are living with moldy basements and broken furnaces and hot water heaters.

Recognizing this dire community need, the Interfaith Leadership Council has been participating with other volunteer agencies in creating a long-term recovery organization, the Southeast Michigan Flood Recovery Group, to help organize the volunteer and financial resources necessary to respond to this continuing blight in our community. As you consider the gifts you wish to share in this holiday season, we invite you to view the video and join with us in responding to this critical community need.

8 Mile is 6 Inches Between Our Ears

Prejudice, fear, hate. What we don't know can hurt us, can hurt our children, can hurt our community. Distributing information can help. Creating understanding can heal.

On December 5, our community members have a unique opportunity to participate in a program designed to get us to look inside ourselves and listen to our neighbors. The day-long program is called Challenge Day. It was initially developed to facilitate dialogue within schools. But the December 5 Challenge Day has been created to facilitate dialogue across the lines that divide our community.

Help Community Find
Health Care Treatment

The Greater Detroit Area Health Council developed a website and mobile application called Find MI Care,
which was developed in response to the community need to receive better coordinated health care treatment in an appropriate setting.

This user-friendly website and mobile app can be used to search for and find clinics and doctors within a specified zip code. Hospitals, physicians, and clinic staff are able to print a list of clinics near the patient's home during the discharge process, and community groups can use this site to connect people to health care resources.

The website can be viewed at www.findmicare.org and the mobile app can be downloaded for free from either the Apple or Google Play stores.

Andrell Sturdivant, Program Coordinator for Find MI Care is available to attend staff meetings at other agencies to present Find MI Care. For more information, please contact: Andrell Sturdivant at [email protected] or 313-963-4990, ext. 240.

Please share this information with anyone who may need or be able to share it.

Detroit Interfaith Outreach Network is offering great ways to volunteer:

Durfee Middle School Literacy Tutors to go once a week for about an hour to work with a student on reading, writing, simple math, etc - based on what the classroom teacher wants.

Career speakers for Life Journeys program - requires you to go to one or two classrooms one day once a year.

This is in conjunction with the Jewish Community Relations Council program.  Contact Janet Meir at [email protected] or call her at 248-320-6710.
