Greater Detroit Muslim Jewish
Solidarity Council
Creative Writing and Art Contest
for High School Students

The Greater Detroit Muslim Jewish Solidarity Council was formed to promote better relations between the two communities. They are holding a creative writing and arts contest during the month of October to offer high school students the chance to express their hopes, visions, challenges, and experiences with "the other" - and possibly win a $100 prize ( in each of the four categories - essay, short story, poetry or art) and have their work published. They will be holding an awards ceremony at Wayne State University on Thurs, Nov. 19 - in conjunction with the Cohn-Haddow Center and the Michigan Muslim Coordinating Council, as part of the Weekend of Twinning, a national  Jewish-Muslim annual program.

Detroit Interfaith Outreach Network is offering great ways to volunteer:

Durfee Middle School Literacy Tutors to go once a week for about an hour to work with a student on reading, writing, simple math, etc - based on what the classroom teacher wants.

Career speakers for Life Journeys program - requires you to go to one or two classrooms one day once a year.

This is in conjunction with the Jewish Community Relations Council program.  Contact Janet Meir at jlmeir@gmail.com or call her at 248-320-6710.
