Brighton Center Director on the Faith Community's Role in the Spiritual Journey of Recovery
|
|
Raymond Waller, Director, Brighton Center for Recovery
|
Addiction can be a black hole that swallows up relationships, money, careers, days, weeks, months and years spent compulsively chasing the physical or psychological satisfaction that comes from addictive behaviors or substances. While many may regard recovery as simply the end of addiction, Brighton Center for Recovery Director, Raymond Waller, defines it as "a return of health across a person's life - mentally, physically, spiritually."

Face to Faith at the Muslim Unity Center last week
Awesome turnout - 45 students and 15 parents and volunteers created dental care packets for South Oakland shelter, and had a Q and A with Imam Al-Masmari. Participants shared a meal donated by the Unity Center and enjoyed a lesson on the basic tenants of Islam by Gigi Salka. They concluded the night with a circle discussion about stereotypes within our own faith traditions and what the most important feature of our faith community is- what do we value the most- The consensus was that they are drawn to their faith community because of the sense of community it offers.
Our next Face to Faith interfaith event for 8 - 12 graders,
will be held at
The Song and Spirit Institute for Peace
2599 Harvard, Berkley
Thursday, April 30, 6pm - 9pm

IFLC to receive Spirit of Unity Award
|
The Interfaith Leadership Council of Metropolitan Detroit will be presented with the Spirit of Unity Award at the 9th Annual Spirit Awards Banquet to be held on May 13, 2015.
In his letter, Ecumenical Theological Seminary President Dr. Stephen Butler Murray wrote "The Spirit Awards are among the highest honors that Ecumenical Theological Seminary may offer to those whose life work mirrors the mission and ethical commitments of the seminary community. We received your successful nomination among the nominations of many extraordinary citizens and organizations championing the common good, and you were recognized as the standard bearer among those nominees in the category of The Spirit of Unity Award, which "recognizes an individual or organization that is working in the community to promote and establish an appreciation and understanding of different cultures and religions."
