DEPUTY PALOOZA!

On April 23, the Alumni Association held its sixth Annual Meeting in Washington DC.  We celebrated the important role of Deputy Administrators in the Agency. EPA's longest serving Deputy Administrator, Bob Perciasepe, was the featured speaker and he was joined for questions and answers by former Deputy Administrators Barbara Blum, Mike McCabe, Peter Robertson and Marcus Peacock.  Current Acting Deputy Administrator Stan Meiburg dropped in as well and stayed for the whole program and social hour.  It really was a DeputyPalooza! Barbara Blum
Deputy to Doug Costle
... a close friend of the President called Costle to ask why he let "that crazy lady" make a decision when Doug was out of the country. I was able to show Doug the congrat-ulatory message I got from Attorney General Griffin Bell...

Mike McCabe
Deputy to Carol Browner
... Deputy Administrator was a very rewarding job -- however Regional Administrator is the best job in the Agency! I was so fortunate to be able to work with the talented staff at EPA ...

Marcus Peacock
Deputy to Steve Johnson
... the Government
Performance and Results Act gave agency Deputies a defined role  - the Chief Operating Officers of their organizations ...

Peter Robertson
Deputy to Carol Browner
... I came into the Deputy Administrator job thinking the career staff worked for me; I came to realize that it was my good fortune to work for them ...

Special Guest
Stan Meiburg, Acting Deputy Administrator

Stan was instrumental in moving the MOU with EPA forward.  He attended a Dallas gathering of Alumni Association members on April 21 and spoke with virtually everybody at the DC meeting on April 23.

Bob Perciasepe,  Featured Speaker

Addressing a rapt audience of former colleagues, Bob Perciasepe, Deputy Administrator to both Gina McCarthy and Lisa Jackson, offered insights on EPA's accomplishments and challenges. Read an article about Bob's comments at this Link

Karl Brooks Addresses MOU
Former Region 7 RA and Acting AA for Administration and Resources Management Karl Brooks spoke to the Association about EPA's enthusiasm for bringing our members' experiences and expertise to bear in strengthening the skills of current staff under a Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Association on February 25, 2015.  His organization will work with a committee being led by Board Member Phyllis Flaherty to design the program.  If you are willing to volunteer to help on program design or to participate in training sessions or mentoring, please click this  Link.
They Did Not Sue The Deputy
The Warblers, Janet Pawlukiewicz, Louise Wise, and Paul Cough serenaded the Deputy Administrators with Goin' Up to Congress (And We're Gonna Get Hammered ) to the tune of Going to the Chapel and I Sued McCarthy, But I Did Not Sue Her Deputy to the tune of Bob Marley's I Shot the Sheriff. Lyrics can be found at this Link.  A short video of the performance can be found at this Link.
Election Results
Incumbents Helga Butler, Dave Calkins, Fran Philips and Bob Wayland were elected to an additional term and former Deputy Regional Administrator (Region 5) Bahrat Mathur was elected to his first term in this year's Board election. Terms on the Board of Directors are three years. Biographical information on all current members of the Board can be found at this Link.

We are very grateful for the service of Alan Levin on the Board of Directors.  Alan chose not to seek another term. Alan's leadership, with Helga Butler, of the Association's Oral History Project saw our library of these resources expand greatly.
We are very sorry we failed in our plans to link remote members to the April 23 meeting by telephone.  Jim Barnes had planned to participate in the panel of Deputy Administrators from Indiana.

Once again we are grateful to member Roger Martella and his law firm, Sidley Austin, for providing a first-class venue for our meeting. A big thank you to Helga Butler whose great photos and video clips give us an excellent visual record of the fun!
