HAPPY NEW YEAR!
On MLK Day last week, Dreamers from our Chelsea II, DeHostos-Wise, and Ravenswood cohorts joined together to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dreamers Fabian Rodriguez, Talia Scott, Nachary Hernandez, Jonathan Ortiz, and Kijon Jones wrote about the event:

"We began our day by splitting into groups and conducting ice-breakers in order to get to know each other. Each group was led by a civic group member from the DeHostos-Wise program. We played 'the name game' and 'facts about you'. The purpose of these games was to get acquainted with our fellow Dreamers from other programs. By the end of the games we felt comfortable with other Dreamers and this was useful because the next activity required a level of comfort discussing personal issues."

Please Join us in Welcoming a New Sponsor to IHDF-NY!

We are thrilled to announce Scott Jaffee as the first Sponsor of a newly planned cohort to open in Fall 2014 in the South Bronx! The Owner of Metropolitan Realty Group LLC, Scott is a highly motivated business professional who is committed to helping young people succeed. Mr. Jaffee has made a generous pledge of $300,000 over twelve years, which will lay the foundation for a dynamic program that will include academic support, enrichment, mentoring, and college and career readiness activities for Dreamers from the first grade through college.

To make this Bronx Cohort a reality, we are actively searching for additional public and private investors to join Mr. Jaffee in this worthwhile endeavor. IHDF-NY Sponsors are defined as individuals, couples, family members, business colleagues, foundations, or corporations who can singlehandedly or collectively raise $250,000 per year in operating funds. The role of a Sponsor can vary and Sponsors can determine their level of involvement based on their availability and interest.  If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about joining Scott as a Sponsor, please contact Thierry Cazeau at 212-293-5488 or [email protected]. Talia's Trip to The White House

Talia, a Dreamer from our DeHostos cohort, is determined to become president of the United States. This past year she attended the Sadie Nash Leadership Project Summer Institute at the prompting of her "I Have A Dream" Program Director, and was startled to learn about the under-representation of women of color in politics. In November Sadie Nash offered Talia the opportunity to accept the National Arts and Humanities Award in Washington D.C. on the organization's behalf. Visiting the White House and meeting First Lady Michelle Obama further inspired Talia, and we look forward to supporting her dream of becoming president!

Talia wrote about her experience: "I walked into the White House filled with a range of emotions: excitement, fear, happiness. I would have never imagined that I would be standing in the White House so soon. It felt surreal with the lights, press and cameras..."  Read more >>

Dreamers Give Back

On November 5th, as New Yorkers flooded the polls to vote for the city's new mayor, the DeHostos-Wise Dreamers used their day off from school to help others. The Dreamers worked with DOROT, an organization that mobilizes volunteers of all ages to improve the life and health of the elderly. Through a new program called 'Cook and Dine', the Dreamers shopped, cooked, and then served meals to the elderly. The DeHostos Dreamers got high praise for their delectable food! Each group had a different experience at dinner: some listened to stories from the "old days," one group celebrated a birthday, and another group was treated to some opera singing. The Dreamers loved their time at DOROT and their first question was, "When can we go back?"

Lights on Afterschool

On October 17th, hundreds of thousands of children, parents, business and community leaders came together for Lights On Afterschool events across the country to celebrate the achievements of afterschool students and draw attention to the need for more afterschool programs to serve the millions of children nationwide who are unsupervised and at risk each weekday afternoon. At our IHDF-NY East Harlem site, guests peeked into the many activities that Dreamers participate in each day after school. Dancers from the New School instructed the Dreamers in a dance/movement lesson, and the event's guests treated the Dreamers to Reading Parties. Dreamers loved the small group reading sessions with new friends and the guests enjoyed meeting the Dreamers and learning what they love about afterschool programming.
