YEAR IN REVIEW

Dear Supporters,

The start of a new program year is a time for us to reflect on an amazing spring and summer of graduations, moving up ceremonies, Summer Academy for our younger Dreamers, and enrichment, internship and work experiences for our older Dreamers. The promise and potential of the new program year, however, generates an excitement within "I Have A Dream" - NY about the new partnerships and opportunities that will assist us in preparing our Dreamers for success in college and beyond.

We'll use this quarterly newsletter to keep our supporters, partners and friends updated on our activities and the progress of our Dreamers. We look forward to your feedback and participation in making this another successful year for the organization, as well as our Dreamers and their families. We hope that you'll visit our website throughout the year to learn more about how you can help our Dreamers achieve their dreams:

Introducing the East Harlem Dreamer Class of 2023/2024

This year, we were exceptionally excited to launch our new East Harlem cohort in partnership with Hunter College and several generous Sponsors. Now, 65 second, third, and fourth-graders from P.S. 7 are on the pathway to college. Our launch event was highlighted by a fantastic musical performance by the Dreamers and a moving rendition of the Dreamer Pledge by our 94-year-old Founder, Eugene M. Lang.

Congratulations Graduates!

We proudly announced the high school graduation of our seven seniors this year: Jonathan Coronado, Juan Marquez, and Branly Espinal from the IHDF-NY DeHostos Wise Program; and Mychelle Easley, Krystal Gonzalez, Jose Hiraldo, and Monica Polanco from the IHDF-NY Melrose II cohort. We are extremely proud of their hard work and determination in completing their high school career and wish them the best as they continue their journey to college! Learn more >>

Spring Gala

More than 400 attendees celebrated the "I Have A Dream" Foundation's annual "Spirit of the Dream" Spring Gala in New York City this June, honoring New York State Education Commissioner Dr. John King, Jr. The event brought together hundreds of national educators, business leaders, champions, and "I Have A Dream" students and alumni to raise funds for the organization and engage new champions. Our new East Harlem Dreamers performed, and Stephanie Sosa, a Dreamer from our IHDF-NY Melrose I cohort, was presented with the 2013 "Spirit of the Dream" Award for her continued success. Learn more >>

Exciting Partnership

We developed an exciting partnership this year with nycTies, a non-profit service organization comprised of young professionals committed to building strong ties within the NYC community through philanthropic giving. Starting in February 2013, nycTIES has engaged our Dreamers in a number of exciting activities including an icebreaker event, Power Hours which are designed to help Dreamers develop valuable professional skills, and a Museum Day at the MOMA for our youngest Dreamers. In the new school year, we'll be working together for a Wellness Day (a day full of fun nutrition and activity), the Amazing Race (an exciting scavenger hunt through Central Park), and continued Power Hours centered on college readiness. Looking Ahead

As we pack away our sunscreen and beach hats, "I Have A Dream" - NY is looking toward a fun and exciting 2013-14 school year! Some highlights of the year to come include:
  • The second year of our program at PS 7 in East Harlem, which will be filled with drama literacy, dance, music, and academic activities with students and faculty from The New School and Hunter College, as well as the continuation of the unique Free Arts mentoring program.
  • Continuing our partnership with nycTies (see above).
  • Working with over 150 high schoolers. We're ready to focus on college readiness and excited for all of the adventures that come with college exploration! College trips, student speakers, SATs, and information sessions will keep us very busy.
  • Another "Spirit of the Dream" Gala, on June 10, 2014. Save the date!
