VALPO CHAMBER BOARD SUPPORTS SCHOOL REFERENDUMS

On Thursday, April 23, Rex Richards, Valpo Chamber President, and Deb Anselm, Valpo Chamber Board Chair, announced the endorsement of the Valparaiso Community Schools referendums which will appear on the ballot May 5.

Below is the official statement that was released.

The Valparaiso Chamber is announcing today that the Board of Directors has endorsed the two referendums that will be on the May 5 ballot. "The Valpo Chamber encourages all voters to go to their polling place to support the Valparaiso Schools by voting YES to both ballot referendums," stated Rex Richards, President of the Valpo Chamber.

Richards further stated that, "The Chamber appointed a special Task Force over one year ago to begin reviewing the proposed referendums. This Task Force was made up of some of the most recent past chairs of the Valpo Chamber. Co-chairs of the Task Force were Jon Schmaltz, Attorney with Burke Costanza and Carberry and Martin Sonnenberg, President of Task Force Tips."

The Task Force reviewed the components of the two referendums from the standpoint of what is good for the business community from a long term workforce perspective, as well as the impact to the long term value to the community as a whole. "After extensive questions to the School Administration as well as a review of the components of the two referendums, the Task Force concluded there is a definite need for the passage of both referendums. The Task Force made its recommendation to the Chamber Executive Committee who discussed and approved it and forwarded it to the full Chamber Board where it was discussed and approved," stated Richards.

The Chamber President stated, "These two referendums are a major milestone for continuing the high educational attainment level of the Valparaiso School System which has been a major core asset of the community. The school system needs these two referendums to keep this school system in the top tier of excellence in the State of Indiana."

VALPARAISO ADVANCES IN AMERICA'S BEST COMMUNITIES CONTEST

The City of Valparaiso was selected as one of 50 finalists for America's Best Communities, a nationwide program created by Frontier Communications and Dish Network. The distinction comes with a $50,000 prize to be used as seed money as the city continues to compete for up to $3 million in cash and other rewards to support innovation and long-term growth. "We're delighted to be recognized as a top community," said Mayor Jon Costas. "We also look forward to moving ahead in this competition. As luck would have it, the program rewards the very same innovation we value in Valparaiso," he said

America's Best Communities was introduced to inspire communities to develop plans that stimulate economic development. Frontier challenged communities from its 27-state service territory to apply for the awards in a competition that rewards innovation with support and funding.  The Valpo Chamber of Commerce nominated the city.

Valparaiso was selected based on a comprehensive application, submitted through the Valpo Chamber, assessing the city's economic development initiatives, vision, and indicators of success. The $50,000 prize is comprised $35,000 from Frontier; and a $15,000 contribution from ADTRAN, a corporate sponsor that will partner with Valparaiso as the city continues on to the semi-final round of competition. The grand prizes are $3 million for first place, $2 million for second place and $1 million for third place. The money will go directly to helping communities realize their vision.
