OLYMPIC LEARNING
Journey's 5th grade students gathered on Coronado Beach last week with Waldorf schools from all over SoCal to participate in the Pentathlon. This cherished event brings to life their yearlong studies of ancient civilizations.

On a beautiful San Diego morning, the air was filled with music and odes to the Greek gods and goddesses written by the students.
Long Jump at the Pentathlon
Journey students Haley, Senna, Tess and Ayva were selected to share their odes at the opening ceremonies. Zeus himself came down from Mt. Olympus to bless the games.
Greek wrestling
Discus at the Pentathlon
Students participated in wrestling, javelin, discus, long jump and the 50 yard dash. The events concluded with a 200 yard relay race.
Opening Ceremonies
Olympians
Conducting themselves with grace and beauty, students cheered and supported one another while making new friends from other schools.
Olympian 2016
Opening Ceremony Run
Students were so spirited and happy--truly enjoying the Olympic Games.
THE IMPORTANCE OF PLAY
Sunflower Kindy Students at Play
Physics in Creative Play
If you've ever wondered why Journey Kindergarten students spend so much time outdoors and in creative play, read the following articles that support Journey's play-based program:
  • The Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA) recently re-posted an article on the importance of play. Visit their website to read why Finnish schools believe that "children learn best through play."
  • A 2010 CNN article by a two Harvard professors share their insight into why play is important to academic success here.
BOTTLE & CAN RECYCLING IS BACK
Starting next Thursday, we will resume plastic bottle and aluminum can recycling drop-offs every Thursday morning. This year we brought in nearly $1000 to support our Outdoor Classrooms and Eco-Literacy.
AND THE WINNER IS...
Our beloved Planet Earth is the grand prize winner of our recent clothing drive. We are so proud of the families who contributed to Clothes for the Cause that collected nearly 20K lbs of items to be reused or recycled. Almost $3K will benefit Journey students through our All School Field Trip Fund. Most contributions came from Ms. Cameron's and Miss Morrison's classes who will be celebrating with an ice cream party.
