Journey's beloved May Faire is Wed., May 4 at 10am. Family and friends are invited to see students dressed in white, adorned with flower crowns, and dancing around the maypole! Bring hats, sunscreen, low beach chairs, umbrellas and EZ-ups, picnic blankets and a picnic lunch and water bottle to comfortably enjoy the day. Homebaked goodies and ice cream will be sold for cash in support of the All-School Field Trip Fund. Arrive early to help set-up, drop off baked goods, and secure your seat.
8TH GRADE PROJECTS: MAY 2-6
Journey School is so proud of our intelligent, articulate, creative, self-motivated, kind, compassionate and multi-talented 8th grade students.

Come see just how amazing they are at next week's 8th Grade Project Presentations on May 2-6 at 6pm. See the schedule here. For the research projects, 8th graders choose their topics, enlist the help of mentors, build physical projects, and give oral presentations to the community. In preparation, Digital Literacy skills are put to task:

The 8th Grade Projects aren't to be missed! Support the students while learning about kelp, blacksmiths, olive oil, 3D printing, web design, waves, dog training, becoming a singer, special effect makeup, raising cattle, and so much more. Visit our blog for the presentation schedule.
FIELD TRIPS SUPPORT LEARNING
Field trips are an integral part of the Journey School curriculum. Through direct observation, participation, and immersion, students gain powerful insight and knowledge by doing. In Kindergarten, field trips include nature outings such as class walks and time in the garden.

Third grade marks an anticipated milestone of an overnight trip; this year to a working farm, where students will deepen their learning of agriculture and farming.
4th grade concluded their animal studies on an overnight trip to Safari Park and their California studies came to life in an immersion experience as the crew of Dana Point's tall ship, The Spirit:

Older Journey students are challenged on trips that enliven their curricular learning as well. Recently, 5th graders experienced a trip to Catalina:

In Grade 6, students enjoyed lessons in team building and geology at Pali Institute; 7th graders camped at Quail Springs permaculture site; and 8th grade will soon leave for the Yuba River in the Sierra Nevada mountains for their culminating 8th Grade Trip. Over the years, Journey students gain valuable knowledge about cooperation, personal responsibility, and environmental stewardship.
ALL-SCHOOL FIELD TRIP FUND
FieldTripFund
Parents of younger children may not realize that overnight class trips cost between $150-$1100 per student. Journey School and Parent Cabinet have a goal of making it possible for all students to attend the class trips without impacting the school budget. By supporting PC's All-School Field Trip fundraisers, you help make it possible.

3 Ways to support the All-School Field Trip Fund next week:

#1: Continue to collect donations of clothing, textiles and shoes to
be reused and recycled by Clothes for the Cause. We've raised over $1000 for our All-School Field Trip Fund so far and the deadline has been extended two more weeks. Our goal is for each student to bring ten large garbage bags filled with acceptable items. Get ideas on our blog.
***A special thank you to our 7th graders Cole, Hailey, Lily and Sunny for filling a truck with donations making room in our storage bin for more.

Additional ways to support the All-School Field Trip Fund:

#2: Bring baked goods (no nuts) for May Faire. Get details here.

#3: Bring cash to May Faire to purchase baked goods and ice cream for your family to enjoy.
TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK
Next week, May 2-6, is Teacher Appreciation Week and Parent Cabinet will host a Teacher Appreciation Luncheon on May 11 after the 9am Parent Cabinet meeting. For Teacher Appreciation, families are asked to bring gifts of gratitude for their teacher any day through 5/11. In addition to their teacher, each class will be responsible for one or two specialty teachers. Of course, all are welcome to show appreciation to as many teachers as you wish. Look for details in your room parent email.
PARENT WORKSHOP & MOVIE NIGHT
Journey School is hosting a Cyber Civics workshop on Sat., May 7 and we are excited to have a few neighboring Waldorf schools joining us. Also invited are any Journey parents who wish to see what their children will be learning in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade and more importantly, why children should be kept off of social media, etc. until then.

*Limited space is now being offered to PARENTS at a substantial discount ($50 off the $85 regular fee. Use code JSPARENT). Only 20 seats remain--so pre-registration is mandatory. Sign up here.

The workshop includes a Friday night (5/6) screening of The Mask You Live In, the film that sparked a national conversation about limiting masculine stereotypes in media and how to raise a healthier, less violent generation of boys and young men.
