MAKING LEARNING MEANINGFUL
"Intelligence plus character--that is the true goal of education."
                             ~Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Third graders took their lessons on farming to new heights last week by volunteering for Second Harvest Food Bank. The 2000 pounds of broccoli and cauliflower they harvested will help feed people in need. Milan's Main Lesson work recaps the experience:

MINIMUM DAYS ALL NEXT WEEK
Parent-Teacher Conferences are next week 1/25-1/29. Every day is a minimum day (12:10 for Kindy and 12:30 for Grades) and most childcare/aftercare activities are cancelled. Here are some options:
  • Mr. Storm and Ms. Sylvia have teamed up to offer care from 12:30-3 each day. $25/day. Email Storm for details.
  • Ms. Elizabeth will offer Yoga on Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30-2. Sign up here.
  • Wednesday aftercare classes will meet as scheduled.
EATING UP FRACTIONS
In 4th grade, students begin to work with numbers conceptually as well as experientially. When a child comprehends that the greater the denominator, the smaller the fraction, we witness an important step in her or his development. 4th graders are also finding that fractions can be delicious, as they slice pizza, section chocolate, quarter apples, and more. By the end of the year, they'll learn the four operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing) in fractions and simple fraction-to-decimal conversion.

MOVIE SCREENING WED. NIGHT 1/27
Mask You Live In BannerParents of boys and girls are invited to join the Journey School Community for the only SoCal public screening of a thought-provoking documentary that examines how American society's definition of masculinity confines both genders and the detrimental behaviors that result from the pressures to conform. The Mask You Live In, a Sundance Film Festival Selection, will be screened on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 6:30pm in the MPR followed by a discussion led by Journey Educational Directors, Tim and Patti Connolly, and CyberWise founder, Diana Graber. $5 advance ticket sales available online through 1/26 or $10 at the door. The public is encouraged to attend.
SAVE THE DATE: COMMUNITY MEETING
Journey's All School Community Meeting and Gallery Walk will take place on Feb. 17th at 5:30pm. Gavin Keller, the Journey School Foundation, and other special guests will offer important updates, talk about "where we are now", and share visions for the future. Afterward, Gallery Walk will showcase what students are learning in displays of beautiful Main Lesson work and class projects. We ask that all families are represented.
LAST CHANCE: CIRCUS INTENSIVE
Child on a trapeze If you know any monkeys who like to swing and climb, don't let them miss out on an exclusive aftercare event offered by Ms. Joy and visiting Circus Director, Jennifer Dempsey. On Wed., Feb. 10 from 12:30-3pm, students in Grades 5-8 (1-4 with older sibling or parent) will receive lessons in juggling, acrobatics, balance, clowning, aerial arts, trapeze, and more. $45/student. 20 signups needed by 1/25. RSVP NOW to Ms. Joy.
AUCTION DONATION WISH LIST
Journey's annual Auction Gala and biggest fundraiser is coming up on Saturday, March 12 at 6pm. Please help us secure donations for items YOU WANT TO BID on during our Silent, Live, and ONLINE Auctions!

Our annual auction raises tens of thousands of dollars in one special night to support the programs that make Journey so unique and special. We raise those funds by getting our supporters (both in-person and online) to BID on donated items. Since the items are donated, Parent Cabinet is able to collect the proceeds and donate it to Journey School for the specialty programs, teacher training, campus enhancements, learning materials and supplies, field trip assistance, and more!

The success of the auction DEPENDS on the quality and quantity of great items we have to offer. Think outside the box--get with friends to offer a taco party or host a movie night! What talent or service can you offer, where do you work, and who do you know? GREAT ITEMS = GREAT AUCTION!

HOW CAN YOU HELP?
  • Look at this list and sign up to GO ASK FOR THE ITEM DONATION!
  • Don't like to ask, but have a great contact for an item? Sign-up and write a note to Auction Committee in the NOTES section and we'll send one of our expert "askers" to get that donation on your behalf.
  • Have a potential donation not on the list? Email Parent Cabinet to share your donation and we'll add it to the list. Deadline for donations is February 12, 2016.

RECYCLE = CASH FOR JOURNEY
Bring in your plastic CRV-marked bottles and aluminum cans (no glass please) next Thursday, 1/28. The big recycling container by the basketball courts is almost full and will be picked up at the end of January. Let's fill it all the way to make the most of this year's collection. Thank you Theresa O. for leading our efforts!

Starting in February, the cleaned out recycling container will also be the drop point for used clothing, shoes and household textiles for a schoolwide Clothes for Cause drive to benefit the All School Field Trip Fund. More details to come. So, start Spring Cleaning now and hold on to your unwanted textiles (clothes, rugs, towels, etc.) and shoes in any condition. This drive will accept ripped, stained, torn, thread-bare, worn-out...so don't send it to the landfill, save it for Journey!
