7th grade students are producing excellent work in this month's creative writing block. In his "Writing from an Image" essay, Calvin responds to a Nico Fredia photograph:

Keep going, I tell myself. Leaves crunch under my feet, and I hear my breath coming faster and faster. The trees are a blur as I sprint past them. My stomach is churning, my legs and head aching. Suddenly, two hunters are in the clearing ahead of me, holding two gleaming swords like the one I have at my side. My heart feels like it's going to burst from my chest. They see me, Yaaaugh! They charge! I jump, my sword held high, catching the light from the sun, ready to strike.
For her assignment, "On the Eve of my Execution," Mia writes an elegy entitled, "Never":
I will be gone tomorrow.
Iron bars are not my only cage.
I am trapped by the thought of things
I will never do again.
I will never hold another book,
Never smell the ocean air,
Never again speak "hello" or "goodbye,"
Never feel happiness again,
Yet I did nothing wrong.
Never.
This single word is consuming me.
Outside my prison, the moon's light grows weak,
The last moon I will ever see.
The twinkling stars, the last ones
I will ever watch, disappear
I see the sun of my last day
Slowly make its way into the world.
The sun will continue forever.
I will not.
A dying bird from far below chirps
It's last song.
And mine.

IMPORTANT HALLOWEEN NOTICE

Journey School's Halloween Parade, to be held on Friday 10/30, has been a fun tradition for our students since the school began. This festival offers an opportunity to dress in costumes that feature grade-level curriculum themes, allowing older students to remember their past as they enjoy the younger students' costumes, and as the younger ones view the older students' costumes they wonder about the future.
In order for your child to have the the best experience possible, it is important that they stay within their curricular themes in assembling simple, homemade costumes. Please visit the Journey School website for curricular costume ideas and guidelines on make-up, hair dye, temporary tattoos, and play weapons.

BRINGING LIGHT INTO THE DARKNESS
|
Journey School's core values include being 'celebratory, soul-nourishing, and joyful' and we practice these important principles through seasonal festivals. We believe that a reverence and sense of guardianship for the earth and all her inhabitants are nurtured through these celebrations.
