FROM PASSION TO POETRY: STUDENTS RECOGNIZED NATIONALLY
|
Free verse poetry empowers students to explore their passions and to express themselves without too many confines.
17 poems from students at Journey have already been selected for national publication. Check out this sample from a 6th grader who is inspired by our Book Whisperer independent reading program, which challenges all students to read a minimum of 40 books from 6 genres by June.
Is it a reading zone?
When I open a book
And it seems my world has stopped
Or paused or froze?
What do I know?!
As I venture out into a magical land
With dangerous dragons that breathe fire
And princesses with golden hair
Where I ride with my knight in shining armor.
Is it a reading zone?
When I discover ancient treasure in an underwater cave
Or fall into a wardrobe full of snow,
This time machine takes me away
To places I want to go!
Is it a reading zone?
Will I ever know?
When I open my favorite book
A special feast waits just for me
With layers and layers of delicious words
And each page is my dessert.
This must be my reading zone!
