8th grade students just lived through the Revolutionary War at Riley's Farm as the culminating activity of their American History studies. Textbooks came alive as students participated in hands-on and fun activities, including battling the Red Coats! - Click here to read a UNESCO report about experiential learning and why it is essential.

BOOK WHISPERERS: AWAKENING A PASSION FOR READING
|
Our new Book Whisperer reading program aims to inspire students to read 40 or more books a year. That's why the Journey School Foundation is excited to announce that Chevron and the Rise Up Foundation just teamed up to augment existing classroom libraries with dozens of new books. |

| Research proves that the following components of a student-centered reading program increase achievement and motivation: access to books, student choice, time to read, school-wide support, and well-stocked libraries with qualified staff. The Book Whisperer initiative at Journey was launched by these dedicated parents and teachers: Lisa Crow, Lisa O'Neil, Shelley Kelley, Alyson Smith, Kerry Townley-Smith and Amanda Simmons.

LEARNING SPOTLIGHT: GRADE 4
|
Fourth graders were excited to see dozens of animals up close on Friday when they ventured to Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach as part of their Zoology block. Expanding upon recent studies about California History and Geography, emphasis was placed on understanding animals native to California; including: the Giant Pacific Octopus, the California Rattlesnake, and the Mojave Desert Tortoise.
Students studied and touched stingrays, sharks, jellyfish, and starfish. 4th Grade Teacher, Miss Torrey, tells us: "We took part in an educational program through the Aquarium entitled 'Predator,' where students learned and debated about which sea creatures were truly predators in the ocean. We are having a great start to the year!"

We want to take a moment to thank parents and students for improved timeliness over the past 10 days. Very few students are arriving late and we think it's realistic to achieve multiple days without tardies next week. Keep up the hard work! Together, we'll teach the children responsibility, accountability, and consideration.
