LEARNING SPOTLIGHT: GRADE 3 STUDENTS ARE EARTHKEEPERS!
|
In January, Grade 3 students will help restore the Aliso Viejo Watershed and Creek Areas thanks to a generous grant just awarded by Inside the Outdoors. Ms. Barger, 3rd grade teacher, shares "What a great way to start off 2015! I look forward to this wonderful opportunity to learn about our own backyard while serving the community!"

The third graders are now learning math concepts in meaningful contexts, including hands-on lessons related to linear measurement and time-telling (seasons, months, weeks, a year). In English Language Arts, students continue to learn cursive and proper handwriting. According to the New York Times, the handwriting process has myriad educational benefits.

Built by U.S. Veterans
|
It takes a village to make all of this happen! For example, have you seen the new Green Heart Garden table built by OC Master Gardener, Erik, and veterans Ed and Jon? They donated their time and craftsmanship to gift our students with an appropriate place to journal, converse or share a meal. Big thanks to Journey volunteer parents, Jane and Dave, for keeping those pumpkins growing for Harvest Faire and repairing/painting the 3rd grade garden fence.
We can use your help to keep our gardens beautiful! Our greatest need is watering, so if you notice a dry planter box, please take 5 minutes, pick up a hose, and give it a gentle spray. Don't be shy. If you prefer to work with others in the community, join the Garden Volunteers each Wednesday morning or visit the garden website.
