A DIGITAL MEDIA LITERACY WORKSHOP NOT TO BE MISSED 10/10-11:
LAST CHANCE!

Preparing students to be safe and to thrive online is one of the most pressing educational issues of our day. That's why we are excited for you to attend Journey School's Digital Media Literacy (DML) workshop on Friday, 10/10 and Saturday, October 10/11. Click here to read the agenda and register before it's too late. Questions may be directed to Gaylen or Mary. Friday evening culminates with a meal together and viewing of the award-winning film, Miss Representation. Parents, please remember that there is no school on Friday, 10/10 as per the calendar.

LEARNING SPOTLIGHT: 5TH GRADE
5th Graders just wrapped up their 1st Botany block. They learned about the beauty, form, and functions of plants through observation, writing, and the arts. To conclude their month-long science exploration, students attended a memorable trip to Sherman Gardens. Students Serena and Annika loved drawing delicate flowers while Nick and the guys were captivated by the survival tactics of carnivorous plants!

This week, students re-entered the world of numbers by recalling previous studies when they "tasted" fractions by cutting food into pieces. They also related prior knowledge about fractions to decimals, and experienced hands-on learning activities about parts to whole. Soon, they will know how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide like and unlike fractions, as well as adding and subtracting numbers with decimals. Click here to research Journey's 5th Grade standards-based curriculum, or read how we're implementing the Common Core
TEACHING APPRENTICE OPPORTUNITY
Amanda Simmons, our standout 5th Grade Teacher, will be on sabbatical for the Spring Semester. As a result, an Apprentice Teacher vacancy exists. Once the right candidate is identified, a full time apprenticeship with Ms. Simmons will start. For the selected Apprentice, there is opportunity to earn a position at another grade level in 2015-16.
