EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING WORKS:
STUDENTS REFLECT
I hear, and I forget
I see, and I remember

I do, and I understand.

-Ancient Chinese proverb

If you review the educational research and talk to the kids, it becomes quickly apparent that this Ancient Chinese truism on experiential education is the way to go if the goal is to actively engage students in deep learning:

5th Graders Ayla and Calvin reflect on their parent-sponsored trip to Catalina: "We had so much fun hiking, kayaking, rock-climbing, and snorkeling on our trip. We learned about composting, native plants, and the indigenous people of Catalina, the Pimuvits, who built their homes out of whale bones and seal skins and had to search for fresh water from springs."

4th Graders, Max H., Max W. and Natalie reflect on their parent-sponsored Spirit boat trip: "The Spirit overnighter was so much fun! The captain taught us to throw down the sails and then tie them back up to the mast. We rigged pulleys and hoisted cargo. Some of us worked in the galley to prepare food while other kids did night watch. We loved watching the sun come up and seeing the streams of light shoot across the ocean to the mainland."

Several 8th Graders reflect on their parent-sponsored trip to Big Bear: "The best part of the week was having the opportunity to get to know each other better and get closer as a class. The rope course and other team-building exercises helped us move out of our comfort zones. We learned about earthquake-safe architecture, aerodynamics, forensics, and more. The dance party and karaoke nights were great fun, too!"

A DOZEN PIECES OF STUDENT ARTWORK
Journey School entered 12 pieces of exemplary student artwork into the "1,000 Pieces of Art" Exhibition as part of Orange County's Imagination Celebration. At least one piece of art from each grade is represented in our submissions.  We will know in a few weeks if any of the artwork is selected for the exhibition.

ALLERGY POLICY VOTE TONIGHT

  • Volunteers are needed on 4/30 to help students create crowns for each classroom. 3rd & 4th grade parents are primarily responsible for set-up and clean-up, though all volunteers are welcome. Click here to volunteer (small pruning sheers needed).
  • All families are asked to bring, or send, a small bouquet of flowers with stems as well as a nut-free dish for 12-15 guests. Potluck assignments by grade are as follows:
    •  K-Fruit/Veggies without need for utensils (i.e. melon slices).
    • 1-3-Main Dishes (sandwiches, wraps, etc.)
    • 4-5-Salads (tabouli, quinoa, etc.)
    • 6-7-Sides (crackers, hummus, cheeses, chips & salsa, etc.)
    • 8-Water & iced tea
  • Thank you, parents, for your donations. If you forgot, you still have time to give $2.00 to your teacher.

  • All students are expected to wear white clothing.
  • The basketball court will be open for parking until 9am. If your car is in that lot at 9am, it must stay there until 1:30 to keep kids safe. A better option is to park behind the school off Pacific Park and Woodfield. Please arrive early and enjoy the short walk from your car.
  • Bring mess kits, picnic blankets, and low beach chairs.
  • Current and incoming families as well as friends may attend.
