The Thursday "Know"
April 17, 2014
WE'RE EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE...
We're excited to announce that Journey will form a second 4th Grade class next year. This action will add significant educational benefit for current and wait-listed students, including: reduced class sizes, more time on task, and increased resources for all Journey children.
COFFEE TALK W/MR. KELLER
Join Mr. Keller next Thursday, 4/24 at 8:45 AM in the MPR to discuss expansion. Growth plans and campus maps will be shared. We'll also discuss the proposed Allergies policy again, which the Board will vote upon next week. To date, school-wide dialogue has been considerate, thoughtful, and honest. Thank you for such a dignified process. Our community has matured immensely. Next Thursday will likely be the last opportunity for stakeholder input.
NEW LOTTERY FOR GRADES 4 & 5
If you or a Waldorf-minded friend have a child entering Grade 4 or 5 next year, Journey School is currently accepting applications. A lottery will be held on May 7, 2014 to fill any available spots and to build waitlists. Please visit our website for more information. A second 5th Grade Class will not be available until 2015-16.
SMARTER BALANCED FIELD (STAR) TEST SCHEDULE
Smarter Balanced and STAR Testing will continue running for the coming weeks. The testing schedule is listed below. The pilot Field Tests will not generate formal student results this year. The STAR test has been discontinued in ELA, Math, and History, but not in Science. STAR science testing will occur May 14th for grades 5 and 8 only.

MRS. KELLEY: A TRUE EARTH HERO

The Wyland Foundation, Toyota, and KCBS2/KCAL9 recently honored Mrs. Kelley as an Earth Month Hero! Mrs. Kelley teaches Grade 6 at Journey and is 1 of only 5 Southern California teachers selected for inspiring students through environmental education. Visit the Wyland Foundation and KCBS2/KCAL9 websites to learn more. Ms. Kelley will use all of her prize money to add more books to the students' budding library and to enhance the garden.

In celebration Earth Month, we invite you to join  Master Gardener volunteer, Erik Katzmaier, and our garden team in our Green Heart Garden on Wednesday mornings. Learn more about the importance of Earth Month here.
1ST DONATION TO OUR TENT GEAR LIBRARY
Starting in 3rd grade many Journey School overnight field trips require camping tents. Our goal is a "library" of at least 30 tents. This will ensure everyone can participate and that we're not scrambling last minute for tents. The Orange County REI Outreach Coordinator, Lyndie Bradshaw, made the first personal donation of 2 used tents to our Tent Gear Library. So as you are cleaning out your camping gear before summer, please donate your gently-used 1 to 4 person tents. Unfortunately, we cannot store tents bigger than 4-person or other camping gear at this time. Contact Michele Whiteaker for details.
COMPOST DONATION
If you are a CR&R customer, you may have received a coupon in your April billing statement for two 30-lb. bags of free compost (per coupon, per adult) to be distributed at Laguna Hills High School (corner of Paseo de Valencia and Laguna Hills Drive) THIS Saturday, April 19th from 7am to 10am while supplies last. If anyone would like to donate one or both of their bags to Journey School, our gardens could sure use it! You may leave your donation near the Green Heart Garden shed over the weekend. Please email parent Joel Vanderveen, if you have any questions or need a way to pick up the bags.
PARENT EDUCATION
Tammra Tanner will present a talk on the 9-year change to second grade parents on Tuesday 4/29 at 6pm. All are welcome!
AFTER SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHY CLASS
On Wednesdays from 12:30-3pm, Nirzhar and Rachel Pradhan are offering a weekly hands-on photography class that will help 5th-8th graders develop the eye of a photographer through interactive and fun lessons. Bring your cameras! Classes are $20 per class.
