The Thursday "Know"
March 6, 2014
THANK YOU, FRIENDS
Thanks for stepping up recently. You're driving safely in the lot. Students are on time. Absence rates are down. 99% of you attended a community meeting and then returned re-enrollment forms. Over 20 parents joined us for a coffee on expansion. PC had a great turnout yesterday. Stakeholders attended last week's Board meeting. Now, you're pulling together to
support the auction!

Please invite a friend, relative, business associate, or prospective family.  What we do tomorrow night directly impacts what happens in the classrooms!

COMMON CORE STATE TESTING
Journey, along with thousands of CA schools, will participate in a field test of a new assessment system designed to reshape teaching and learning. The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) tests are replacing the STAR program. Journey's testing window is 4/7-5/16. The STAR Science Test will be on 5/14, for 5th and 8th grade students. Read more about Common Core Testing here.
GALLERY WALK & ALUMNI PANEL 3/26
Student Artwork

Everyone is invited to attend Gallery Walk, which is our "Open House" at 6:00 PM. The Alumni Panel will start at 7:15. It's going to be standing room only! Plan ahead for childcare. We can't offer it this evening.

CLASS PLAYS
Third Grade Play
The annual class play is an important tradition at Journey and a key element of Waldorf-inspired education. Specific dates and times have been published on the website calendar. Please click here to read more.
STUDENT VIRTUE OF THE MONTH:
HELPFULNESS
Helpfulness is being of service. It is doing useful things for others, such as things they cannot do for themselves or just little things that make life easier for someone else. It is important to be helpful and kind to ourselves, too. "I am helpful. I look for ways to be of service. I care for others and myself. I look for helpful ways to make a difference."
MINIMUM DAYS, REPORT CARDS, CONFERENCES & ATTENDANCE

Click here to see the minimum day schedule, which allows teachers to prepare report cards and parent conferences. Teachers will initiate contact with parents if your student needs a conference. You may also request an appointment. NOTE: March is the most important month yet for attendance and timeliness. High schools request transcripts.

ATTENTION 7TH & 8TH GRADE FAMILIES
7th & 8th Grade students may attend the Alumni Panel on 3/26 and must attend at least 1 evening of 8th grade projects. The dates for 8th Grade Projects, the trip, and graduation are published
LEADERSHIP MATTERS
It's important for Journey parents to stay informed on district matters and future directions. You are invited to contribute ideas on desirable attributes for the next superintendent. Click here to read more.
PARENTS AS PARTNERS
Parent Coffee #3: HIGH SCHOOL READINESS. Our goal is to ensure all students head to high school poised for success and leadership. Join us on 3/21 at 8:45am to discuss current strengths, needs, and plans for middle school. You may research current curricular standards and offerings too.

Head, Heart, Hands (HHH): Join Tamara for a workshop on understanding the 6 year and 9 year changes on Wednesday, 3/12 in the Cafe at 9am. A new book study will launch 3/26. Read the flyer.

Patti Connolly at Waldorf School of Orange County (WSOC): You're invited to join Patti for her talks on What Current Brain Research Tells Us About How the Brain Learns Best (3/17 at 6pm) and Five Secrets to Happy, Less-Stressed Parenting (5/19 at 6pm).
JOURNEY SCHOOL BOARD

The Journey School Board invites you to attend the meeting on 3/27, and all other meetings, at 6:00pm. The school's governance system is humming and public attendance is encouraged. An allergy policy will be discussed.

CLOSE THE GAP
Honor your signature by reaching out to Cindy to ensure your Close-The-Gap pledge flows to students. If you haven't yet given, please reconsider and give according to your means. Even a confidential gift of $5.00 boosts important parental participation rates for future grants. Close-The-Gap is an optional program. Donate now by clicking here.
