LEARNING MATH DEEPLY
2nd Graders Are Engaged

2nd Grade students just finished an interactive math block introducing core concepts, like: place value, inequalities, adding and subtracting large numbers, and multiplication facts.

Throughout the lessons, which Ms. Barger and Ms. Davis co-created, various learning modalities ensured that all students could succeed. For example, rhythm sticks, movement, song, art, writing, and cooperative groups were used to teach multiplication facts. Ms. Davis says, "This is why I love the Waldorf approach! It is multidimensional and allows time to address the needs of all children. Teaching at Journey School has been a tremendous blessing for me!"

Ms. Davis especially appreciates how she can care for a group of students over an extended period of time, which "gives you a unique view into the unfolding of every child, and allows a profound relationship to be formed with families."

EXCEPTIONAL OUTDOOR EXPERIENCES

Field trips are rites of passages that allow children to deepen their experience with their curriculum in an outside learning environment. These trips also challenge and fortify character; as students represent Journey School in their local community. The entire student body participates in fundraisers over multiple years to support these exceptional experiences. Read more about our field trips on our website.

8th graders recently traveled to Riley's Farm for an American Revolution Living History Field Trip. Students commented on the value of having these experiences:

"It was educational and fun at the same time, which made me remember more." - Sophia G.

"Instead of just talking about the war, we acted it out, so I, and the class, soaked in all of the information really well." - Sophia W.

See photos, read Flash Fiction written by the students, and read the students' account of their experiences on Riley's Farm.

HANDWORK DEVELOPS THINKING SKILLS

A recent KQED article on how handwork correlates to learning, states that a Stanford neurologist implores grade school teachers to incorporate more handwork into school work. At Journey School, we offer handwork specialty classes for grades 1-5. Learn about our wonderful handwork teacher, Ms. Liz, and how handwork is woven into our curriculum on our Handwork page.

"MATCH" MAKING FOR JOURNEY
Journey School has a donor ready to give $150,000 to Journey's Foundation so we can raise money towards finding and funding our dream of a permanent campus.

In order to receive that generous donation, Journey must first raise $150,000. We are 1/5 of the way there, having already raised $30,000 towards the match since the Foundation was created in 2012.

When we raise the remaining $120,000, the McGee Family will donate $150,000 to the Journey Foundation in support of our vision for a permanent campus!

How Can You Help? Many Ways...
  1. Take the actions outlined in an announcement you'll receive tomorrow to launch a new campaign called "Light Our Journey," in which we'll ask our friends and families for help in raising the remaining $120,000 to secure the $150,000 matching donation.
  2. Complete this form to give permission to have your child's artwork uploaded onto a website that offers products made from your child's art. While there is no obligation to purchase, the Journey portion of proceeds from any sales count towards the match.
  3. Shop at our volunteer-run Oak and the Acorn Store (Journey School Store), all net proceeds count towards the match.

Compost bins will be available for food waste only. Plan ahead! Pack snacks in reusable containers only. All trash will go home in student backpacks and teacher purses.

Do you have tips on how you pack zero waste lunches for your kids? We all want to know your tricks! Send a quick email to mwhiteaker@journeyschool.net and we'll post your answers on the JourneySchool.net blog next Thursday!
VIRTUE OF THE MONTH: RESPECT
  • Respect is an attitude of caring about people, animals, and our Earth and treating them with dignity.
  • Respect is valuing ourselves and others.
  • We show respect by speaking and acting with courtesy.
  • When we are respectful we treat others as we want to be treated.
  • Respect includes honoring the rules of our family, our school, or our classroom community, which make life more orderly and peaceful.
  • Respect is knowing that every man, woman, and child deserves respect, including you.
I am respectful. I treat others, myself, and the Earth as we deserve to be treated. I show courtesy to everyone and everything. I learn from the wisdom of my elders.
