JOURNEY SCHOOL NAMED
CALIFORNIA GREEN RIBBON NOMINEE
At Journey, the only public Waldorf charter school south of Los Angeles, it has always been important to prepare students to be caring environmental citizens and capable leaders for the 21st Century.

That's why we're proud to announce that Journey is the first school ever nominated from Orange County -- and 1 of only 6 California public schools nominated for the Green Ribbon national award in its 2-year history! We are also the first charter school to receive this recognition.

There are 10,000 public schools in California.

The State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson said of this year's nominees:

"These outstanding schools are proof that every school day can provide teachable moments about protecting and sustaining our environment. As a science teacher myself, I'm thrilled to see how these schools are taking what we know about good environmental practices and putting them to work right on campus."

Schools are awarded the prestigious Green Ribbon nomination by judging applicant schools on Three Pillars:

(1) Improve the health and wellness of students and staff;

(2) Provide effective environmental education for the future; and,

(3) Reduce environmental impact and costs.

The U.S. Department of Education will announce national winners on Earth Day (April 22nd).

Please contact Shaheer Faltas, Executive Director, to discuss how you can support a well-rounded, world-class education for Journey students.

*Appreciations:  This nomination would not have happened if it were not for:

  • Michelle Spieker for being our Eco-Literacy CHAMPION from Day 1.
  • Jodi Levine and her eco-education team from Earthroots Field School
  • Michele & Warren Whiteaker for taking a leading role on the extensive Green Ribbon application process, as well as serving on the garden and communications teams.
  • Amy Capelle for her outstanding development work.
  • Master Gardener volunteer, Erik Katzmaier, who has guided us for 3 years.
  • All the Garden Helpers for tending our outdoor classrooms.
  • Amy & Greg Ruth who are leading the Grants Committee and provided valuable input on the application.
  • Our wonderful teachers and staff for modeling stewardship and sharing green practices.
  • Finally, this nomination would never have happened without the tremendous support of all Journey families and staff members-past and present.
