PARENTING TIP:

Dealing with Misbehavior

What do you do when your child misbehaves? Whether it's hitting a sibling, swearing, throwing a toy across the room, talking back, or breaking family rules, children do not always make the best choices. Misbehavior is an opportunity to have your child learn from her mistakes. Luckily, parents have several options available when reacting appropriately and safely to misbehavior.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

The Pew Center on the States created this infographic to underscore the importance of voluntary home visiting programs as a best practice in preventing child abuse and neglect.

This April also marks the 35th anniversary of The Parenting Network. Since day one, our mission has been to strengthen parenting and to prevent child abuse. Home visitation programs have been part of the agency since 1989. The Parenting Network currently provides three home visiting services:
  • Family Links, a care management program for any parent experiencing crisis.
  • HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters), is a parent involvement, school readiness program that helps parents prepare their preschoolers for success in school and beyond.
  • Healthy Families Milwaukee, our newest program. Beginning this spring, we will provide voluntary home visits for expectant parents through a grant from the State of Wisconsin.

Please consider a gift to The Parenting Network to support our child abuse prevention services. While the children in our community are our second largest population served, they are the foremost beneficiaries of our services. Donate now.

Program Spotlight: Family Links

Launched in 2007, Family Links is an evidence-informed Community Response Program designed to help stabilize families, precluding the need for involvement with the child welfare system. The intent is to offer services to families who "fall between the cracks" of the current child welfare model. It provides supportive, voluntary case management for these families and saves hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars annually by providing critical prevention and early intervention services.

Family Links is the only community response program serving Milwaukee County and is recognized as a key child abuse prevention strategy by the Children's Trust Fund. Family Links addresses the needs of families in crisis before their situations escalate into child abuse/neglect. These crisis situations often involve domestic violence, imminent homelessness, food insecurity, alcohol and other drug abuse, or mental health issues.

When a family is referred, a care manager meets with the family to develop an Action Plan based on the family's identified needs. The plan is family-focused and family-driven, building on the families' strengths. Participation is voluntary, and families are able to enter or leave the program at any time. In 2011, The Parenting Network served 107 families with a total of 283 children through Family Links.

Since 1977, The Parenting Network has served families throughout the greater Milwaukee community through its mission to strengthen parenting and to prevent child abuse. Services are provided:

In Homes - home visiting and case management services for any family in need

In Schools - healthy relationship education to prevent sexual violence and teen pregnancy; parenting education for expectant and parenting teens

In the Community - confidential Parent Helpline and a wide variety of parenting education and support classes and groups developed for specific parenting populations at sites throughout Milwaukee County
