Back in the day - and even yesterday - a student daydreaming in class could still manage to look diligent.  But in Hartford's new blended and personalized learning settings, students clicking away on laptops are responsible ... for research, clear arguments, well-crafted essays, and much more.  Passively sitting back and faking it doesn't work so much: everyone has to fully engage and generate results in real time.

After many twists and turns - and hard stops - in the District's efforts over the past few months to upgrade Clark Elementary and Middle School, its turnaround committee this week unanimously approved a new plan to contract with the Capital Region Education Council (CREC) as the lead partner for improving the school.

ThrInDepthoughout the U.S., we talk a good game of confronting lagging academic performance within our school districts, among states, and compared to our competitors in the global economy.  A theme at the recent Yale Educational Leadership conference concerned applying the imperative of accountability to all - from charter school providers to teacher unions, from communities with the most concentrated poverty to those most affluent.  Talk is cheap: Can supporters of school improvement walk the talk and produce positive innovations?

A special meeting of the Hartford Board of Education, to adopt the budget, will be held Tuesday, May 6, 2014, 5:30 p.m. at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Elementary School, 25 Ridgefield Street.

 

An essay contest, 'Voices of Hartford Success," will present the stories of Hartford's young people in their own words, Wednesday, May 7, 2014 from 6-8 p.m., hosted by Aetna at 151 Farmington Avenue.  Please email Martin Estey for additional information.
