A Pipeline, not a Pipe Dream
Progress on Career Readiness in Hartford

Ideally, Hartford's employee pipeline would go from high school to post-secondary opportunities and strong jobs - not to dead ends or worse, prison.  Eradicating the cycle of poverty starts with people getting good jobs, but that only happens when people are actually prepared.  That's why last Thursday's breakfast event at the Mark Twain House was so important.

What Does Adult Education Have to Do with It?

Board of Ed Workshop Begins to Paint the Picture

On Tuesday, Board Members Beth Taylor, Matt Poland, and Chair Rich Wareing, HPS Chief of Staff Alex Nardone, and Board Members Robert Cotto, Jr., and Mike Brescia questioned consultant Richard Pearson and HPS Chief of Early Literacy
and Parent Engagement Eduardo Genao,
on how to improve Adult Education comprehensively.

The Hartford Board of Education this week examined the State-required, District-run adult learning program in the context of the local labor market and resource landscape.  With jobs being a basic anti-poverty program and so many Hartford residents lacking literacy and workforce skills, it's not a pretty picture.  Why does it matter to K-12 school improvement?  Because the adults in need often are the parents of the K-12 students coming up.
