Board Retreat Gets Down to the Ground Zero of Reform

Very few of the most difficult - if not intractable - urban education issues failed to make it to the table yesterday during the intensive, all-day retreat among Hartford Board of Education and District administration leaders.  Perhaps the only thing exceeding the complexity of the topics they faced ... was the frustration that sometimes spilled over.

Ada Torres turned to Achievement First in 2011, after her daughter had been through struggles and failure at four different Hartford schools.  Her child has now flipped the script to become an "A" and "B" Seventh Grade student and a dependable older sister to her three younger siblings.  Is that the heart of the matter in considering whether to expand the school?
