New Haven Superintendent Reginald Mayo served for 21 years.

The New Haven Public Schools last week hired former New York City and six-year New Haven school reform administrator Garth Harries as interim superintendent.  He will take at least a one-year test drive in that 47-school, 21,000-student District.  Are there any Hartford-relevant aspects or lessons to be learned from that search process and outcome?

At Board of Education meetings and forums, Hartford parents and grandparents often recall and request the good old days, when vocational education led to a lifelong trade for young people who wanted a job now  . . . more than a college degree later.  Unfortunately, our industries are dramatically different today and future jobs are undefined.  Postsecondary education is an absolute necessity regardless of the path students take.  Who's going to break the news to them?
