Hartford Focus: National Hearing and Local Forum Examine Gun Violence

Hartford School Superintendent Christina Kishimoto addressed the congressional gun violence field hearing at Hartford Public High School May 10th.

A congressional field hearing at Hartford Public High School (HPHS) last Friday and a community forum at the Parker Memorial Community Center Tuesday left two very different impressions of gun violence tragedies: The official view is that Congress has failed to respond to the horrific Sandy Hook massacre, whereas the unofficial community perspective is that Hartford is not Sandy Hook.

In an instant last December, the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre jolted the emotions of the entire world.  Debate became poisonous and still is.  A high-level congressional delegation urged Hartford Public High School Law & Government Academy students not to lose heart.  This was more than a teaching moment; it's been a teaching year.

A school principal's office can sometimes look like a hospital emergency room, with the constant presentation of new challenges that must be managed fast and well.

It's a complex job; in fact, national surveys show fewer people are excited about it.

But that's not the case at the McDonough Expeditionary Learning School (MELS).
