Next month, the Hartford Board of Education will host workshop and regular meeting discussions that promise to slice and dice the District's 2013-2014 budget.  Good news may be scarce on the federal, state, and local fiscal fronts, but in the not-so-sexy world of operations, Hartford has some great examples of savings due to the efficiency and entrepreneurship that is absolutely critical to supporting classroom learning.

The long-awaited update from the closed-door negotiations in the Sheff v. O'Neill desegregation case is still under wraps, but a partial announcement did hit the public domain this week: Two new magnet schools and the expansion of another in Hartford are the first glimmers of the agreement.
Pursuing Dual Language Literacy
April 13  Program to Explore Strategies

Excitement is growing in Hartford about dual-language schools, in which children who speak English are in classes with speakers of Spanish, for example - and the curriculum brings both groups together to learn both languages. On April 13, a group of education leaders and advocates will examine how the dual language model might work in the Hartford area.
