2012 Petroleum Reduction Annual Report Results Are In!

Maine's Fleets Reduced Fossil Fuel Consumption by Over 1.2 Million Gallons in 2012

A big thank you to all those fleets who participated in the Maine Clean Communities 2012 Alternative Fuel and Petroleum Reduction Annual Report! Your responses help Maine Clean Communities document stakeholders' important petroleum reduction work here in Maine.

Overall, in 2012, the Annual Report results showed that alternative fuels, hybrids, idling policies and other petroleum reduction efforts reduced Maine's dependence on gasoline and diesel by over 1.2 million gallons (gasoline gallon equivalent or GGE). These same efforts reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by over 12,000 tons.

Specifically, the Annual Report showed an increase in the amount of alternative fuels consumed last year as well as a large reduction in petroleum consumption due to idle reduction policies and technology. Fuel economy improvements contributed less than last year, but increases in the deployment of hybrid, electric, and CNG vehicles helped make up the difference.

Thanks again to those who participated in the 2012 Annual Report. Thanks to you, the Maine Clean Communities' Annual Report continues to grow in breadth.

*Note: This Annual Report does not reflect all alternative fuel and petroleum reduction efforts in Maine. The survey is sent to fleets only, and does not capture individual efforts. Further, it relies on self-reporting. Maine Clean Communities cannot assure the accuracy of fleet reports, and not all fleets respond to information requests.  We are grateful to those who do.

First Responders Trained on Alternative Fuel Vehicles in Maine

Held March 16-17th

Maine Fire Service Institute  Instructors recently participated in a First Responder Train the Trainer Course in Maine provided by the National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium.

The two-day workshop was provided as part of a U.S. Department of Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Fire Prevention and Safety grant. Maine Fire Service Institute instructors learned what they need to know to instruct emergency personnel throughout the state about alternative fuel vehicles and how to respond at an accident scene, especially when involving extrication.

The First Responder Safety Training consists of four modules, including biofuels and biofuel vehicles, gaseous fuels and gaseous fuel vehicles, hydrogen and hydrogen-powered vehicles, and electric drive vehicles.

Maine Clean Communities would like to thank the following stakeholders for lending their alternative fuel vehicles that were used as part of the training:

  • Town of Scarborough - Bi-fuel, Propane/gasoline powered Crown Victoria
  • Portland Public Schools - Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered School Bus
  • Greater Portland Transit District - CNG transit Bus
  • Lee Auto Malls - Plug-In Electric Hybrid Toyota Prius
  • Maine Standard Biofuels - A vehicle running on 100% Biodiesel produced in Maine.
