Josh and Kristin Mohagen are making a world of taste in Fergus Falls, Minnesota by
creating artisan chocolate.

While the chocolate is made in Minnesota with just two ingredients-cocoa beans and sugar- the flavors come from all over the world. Where and in what soil a cocoa bean is raised changes the flavor characteristics. Even the vegetation that surrounds the cacao plant influences the flavors in the bean. The Mohagens made it their mission to create a 'taste of place' in their chocolate, hence the business name Terroir Chocolate. "Terroir" means "sense of place" in French.

July 2015
Legislative thank you
Now that the 2015 legislative session and special session have come to a close, AURI would like to thank the office of Governor Mark Dayton and the Minnesota House and Senate for their continued support for the important work that AURI does.

While each budget cycle comes with its own set of unique circumstances, the Institute is appreciative of the hard work put forth by the House Agriculture Finance Committee chaired by Representative Rod Hamilton and the Senate Committee on Environment, Economic Development and Agriculture Budget Division and its chair Senator David Tomassoni.  We appreciate their willingness to listen to our stories of great outcomes from past investment in the entrepreneurs and small business owners who are constantly adding value to Minnesota's agriculture produce by creating new products and processes.

Thank you also to the legislative members who sit on our Board of Directors: Senator Matt Schmit and Representative Deb Kiel. Your support and legislative influence is appreciated.

And last, but not least, AURI would like to thank our clients and partners who took time from their busy schedules to help us tell our story, and who reminded our policy makers of the great service the Institute brings to Minnesota.

Our staff is engaged with clients and our labs are busy all because of the investment that Minnesotans are willing to make in agriculture...and for that we say "Thank You!"

The next Minnesota Renewable Energy Roundtable will be held on July 17, 2015 in Rochester. The event will focus on biomass education and its potential use as part of the Destination Medical Center project in Rochester.

New research reports

Effects of reduced-fat distillers grains inclusion in feedlot diets on cattle

Distillers grains, a coproduct of the ethanol industry, has been utilized in cattle feedlot diets extensively for several years. Recently, ethanol producers have removed oil from corn or distillers grains, thereby creating additional coproducts of ethanol production. Full-fat distillers grains with solubles have been studied, however, reduced-fat distillers grains have not been studied as extensively. This report looked at the effects of lower fat concentration on energy supply and animal performance.

Evaluation of the potential connection between Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles and manure pit foaming in commercial pork production systems

Manure pit foaming in commercial swine facilities has increased over the past few years and has caused concern related to the health and safety of barn workers and hogs.  This report looked at whether dietary changes altered manure chemical composition resulting in a greater risk of manure foaming.
