How much energy is present in corn-derived dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS), which can be utilized by meat-type  including turkeys and chicken broilers? A recent change in production of DDGS removes a portion of oil to produce DDGS effecting the energy content of DDGS or metabolize energy for poultry. Does it impact the energy content?

Get to know AURI Chairman Ron Obermoller

Ron Obermoller serves as chairman of AURI's board, representing the Minnesota Soybean Research & Promotion Council. Obermoller is the fourth generation to run his family's 900-acre corn and soybean farm near Brewster, Minnesota. He is active in the Nobles County Corn and Soybean Growers Associations and is a member of the Minnesota Corn Growers, National Corn Growers and Minnesota Soybean Growers Associations. He has also been involved in several other various local leadership and board positions.

"The best way to predict the future is to create it, and that's what AURI is doing through research and development," says Obermoller. "We're creating the future for rural Minnesota."

When asked if there is an AURI project that stands out to him, Obermoller looks within a few miles of his own backyard. "The Minnesota Soybean Processors and AURI have worked together to create success for the biodiesel industry. Minnesota Soybean Processors has 2,500 farmer members, but it's not just those members who benefit from biodiesel--it raises the soybean prices for pretty much every soybean farmer in Minnesota."
Smude's Natural Sunflower Oil from Pierz, Minnesota, has been recognized for their ability to produce and succeed with innovative products in rural America. The business was listed on the USDA's State Fact Sheet for rural businesses. State fact sheets are a source of information to states providing population, income, education, employment, business and financial information.

In September, AURI scientists Carissa Nath and Doug Root held several successful pork tasting sessions. The goal was to test the taste of the pork based off what each pig was fed. Both Nath and Root were featured in the Marshall Independent paper.

This project covers information on the use of hydrous ethanol to demonstrate high efficiency with reduced emissions in a modified diesel engine. The process has ethanol providing up to 80% of the fuel energy input.
