Calvary 2016 Lent Theological Reading Group

This year the group will be reading The Scapegoat by Ren Girard, one of the most important intellectual thinkers of the late 20th century, who died last year.

As the frontispiece notes, in this text Girard "elucidates striking thematic and structural similarities between myths and persecution texts" and uncovers the same collective violence in the Christian Passion. However, "Christ breaks the mythic cycle of violence and the sacred and provides the model that has enabled Western culture to demystify its own violence."

The group will be meeting in the Evans Room from 7-9 p.m. on the following dates: Feb. 17Feb. 24Mar. 2Mar. 9, and Mar. 16

Copies of the text will be available in the Calvary bookstore.

Please contact Jamie McMahon if you have any questions or to sign up for the email list at jamie.mcmahon@gmail.com.
