Advent Wreath
Resources for Advent

On November 29, the Episcopal Church celebrates the first Sunday of the season of Advent, which will continue for four Sundays, until Christmas Day. The word "advent" is derived from the Latin word adventus, which means "coming," and during this season, the church enters a time of preparation and expectation for the coming of Christ "in power and glory" (Mark 13:26).

This year's Advent campaign for The Episcopal Church website and social media will be based on daily themes highlighting cultural practices and traditions of the season. Each day, beginning Advent I (Nov. 29) through Christmas Day (Dec. 25), history and information, family-centered projects, music, recipes, prayers, and other resources that focus on the day's particular theme will be offered here and throughout their social media outlets.

Additional Advent Resources:

AdventWord: The Society of St. John the Evangelist again this year is offering a word-a-day during Advent, asking readers around the world to upload images to social media that reflect the word, creating a global, digital Advent calendar. Information on the project, along with a link to receive each day's word by email, is at http://aco.org/adventword.

Forward Movement: This Episcopal publishing house has a variety of resources, including its popular Color-It-In posters, for the season of Advent. A list of their offerings is online at www.buildfaith.org/2015/11/02/top-resources-for-advent-and-christmas-forward-movement/.

The Center for the Ministry of Teaching at Virginia Seminary offers lots of suggestions to help parishes and families celebrate the seasons of the church year: www.buildfaith.org/resource-room/seasonal-resources/

Episcopal Relief & Development: ER&D provides tools and inspiration to help your diocese, congregation or group plan, construct and host an Advent campaign to support Episcopal Relief & Development through Gifts for Life at www.episcopalrelief.org/church-groups/advent-toolkit

St. Nicholas Day: St. Nicholas of Myra, the saint that came to be known as Santa Claus, is celebrated on Dec. 6. Learning about his life, ministry and legacy can make for fun and informative Sunday school lessons. Lots of information is available from the St. Nicholas Center at http://www.stnicholascenter.org/pages/home/.

2016 ECF Fellowship Application
is Now Available

From 1964 to 2015, the Episcopal Church Foundation (ECF) has named 214 scholars and ministry leaders as ECF Fellows. ECF pleased to announce that the application for the 2016 Fellowship is now open.

ECF believes that by supporting individuals at an early stage in their ministries, scholars and ministry leaders can make a lasting impact on the wider Church.

All applicants to the Fellowship Partners Program should bear the following in mind:
  • ECF is committed to strengthening the leadership capability of the Episcopal Church. Applicants to the academic and ministry tracks are asked to describe how they will be developing the next generation of leaders for the Episcopal Church, whether in the context of academia, a local congregation, through a church-wide initiative, or in another setting.
  • An ECF Fellowship provides both financial support and networking opportunities. ECF has typically awarded three to four Fellowships per year. New awards range up to $15,000 for the first year and are renewable for an additional two years. In addition to this financial support, new Fellows join a wide network of past Fellows and ECF partners with them so that they may share their knowledge, experience, and best practices with the wider Church.
  • The selection process for an ECF Fellowship is highly competitive. A strong application requires a significant investment of time and effort and ECF encourages all applicants to begin this process early. Applications are due on March 11, 2016. ECF will announce the 2016 Fellows in late May of 2016.
