Important New Information about Pennsylvania Child Protection Laws

Recent changes in the Pennsylvania child protection laws will have a significant impact on all parishes, institutions, and agencies of the diocese.

These new regulations are designed to further protect children and youth from abuse and expand the categories of people considered mandated reporters of child abuse.

The Diocese of Pittsburgh will hold a special information session on Saturday, May 16, 9:30 a.m. to Noon, at Calvary Episcopal Church in East Liberty so that all can learn more about these changes.

KeepKidsSafe.pa.gov is a helpful online resource for additional information.

Changes in the child protection laws include:

Employees and volunteers having contact with children must obtain the following three clearances:
  • Report of criminal history from the Pennsylvania State Police
  • Child Abuse History Clearance from the Department of Human Services
  • Fingerprint based federal criminal history submitted through the Pennsylvania State Police or its authorized agent, the FBI
A volunteer who has been a Pennsylvania resident continuously for the past ten years is not required to have the federal criminal history check.

Anyone, whether employee or volunteer, who has contact with children in the course of his or her work or professional practice is now a mandated reporter of child abuse and will need to complete training on mandated reporting.

Senior Informational Outreach Event at St. David's

St. David's Episcopal Church has announced that Kevin Kramer will be the guest speaker at the Senior Informational Outreach event. The event, which will include the Maintain Your Brain Seminar, is designed to provide senior citizens with information about the services available to them.

The event will be held May 9 from 1-4 p.m. at St. David's Episcopal Church, 925 E. McMurray Road in Venetia, PA.

Recent research suggests that an individual can delay the effects of dementia and Alzheimer's disease by building a "cognitive reserve." Kevin Kramer, who has over 30 years of experience in his field, will discuss ways to build the "cognitive reserve" during the Maintain Your Brain Seminar. While the event itself focuses on services for senior citizens, everyone is encouraged to attend this interactive seminar because it is never too early to begin building a "cognitive reserve." Those in attendance will also receive a copy of Kevin Kramer's booklet, "Memory Maintenance for All Ages."

The Senior Informational Outreach event will also host a number of vendors from the community to provide people with further information about their services, including Senior Living Advisors, Sunrise Assisted Living, and Bethany Hospice, among others. The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are required. For more information on the event or to reserve a space, contact Sue Schmidt, Event Coordinator, at sue.schmidty@gmail.com.

Midnight Mass at Calvary
Lock-In 2015

On Friday, April 17, teenagers from around the diocese met for PYI's annual teen lock-in at Calvary Episcopal Church in East Liberty.

The event started and ended with excellent hot meals. Making full use of the awesome and historic space, games got pretty intense and included human battleship, release, and more.

Teens participated in a service project for children staying at Ronald McDonald House.

"I was most impressed with the open exchange of ideas during the parable and mission discussions," said PYI Director Brent Hansen.

A candlelit worship service was the spiritual highlight of the night. Thanks to everyone who attended, and special thanks to Calvary; Christ Church, North Hills and St. Thomas, Oakmont.
