The Next Step Group of the Sam Shoemaker Community* is pleased to host the Reverend John J. Fetterman (Ret.), who will offer reflections on finding God in our life journeys, and will emphasize our experience with the God of our history, the God who is even more to be discovered than remembered. He will make ample use of the theology of Franciscan friar, Father Richard Rohr, who has written extensively about using the Twelve Steps as a springboard to bringing God into everyone's life.

Fr. Fetterman is currently serving as Theologian in Residence at Calvary Episcopal Church in Shadyside. Fr. Fetterman was ordained in Rome in 1962 after completing graduate studies in Theology at the Gregorian University. He was received into Anglican Orders in 1978 by Bishop Robert Appleyard. He served in the Diocese of Pittsburgh as priest, teacher (University of Pittsburgh) and Nursing Home Administrator (Canterbury Place) until 1992. He then moved to Madison, WI as Rector of Grace Episcopal Church and continued his ministry as pastor and teacher.

In 2002, Fr. Fetterman returned to the Diocese of Pittsburgh and was appointed as the Priest-in-Charge of All Souls in North Versailles. He left that ministry in 2010 because of the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease. He returned to the congregation at Calvary Church in 2012 and was shortly appointed to his current position.

Fr. Richard Rohr founded the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1986, where he presently serves as founding director. He is the author of more than 20 books on spirituality including, Breathing Under Water: Spirituality and the Twelve Steps, Immortal Diamond and Falling Upward. He leads retreats and lectures internationally.

ALL ARE WELCOME

*The Next Step is a small discussion group founded upon the six spiritual principles of Dr. Sam Shoemaker, well-known author and 12th Rector of Calvary Church. The group includes churched and non-churched folks who engage in collective self-examination, contemplation, and cultivation of the inner life in order to achieve spiritual and emotional sobriety. The group meets every Saturday at Calvary Church from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in the Conference Room.

The Commission on Racism works within and through the Diocese of Pittsburgh to witness to the equality of persons before God and to raise awareness of racism and how to counteract it. Because racism, both overt and hidden, continues to harm our communities and parishes, the Commission suggests that prayer and practical actions to combat racism be a part of every parish's program.

The Commission recommends the following upcoming events, all at the Carnegie Museums in Oakland, for your consideration and calendars. Much more detail is available here.

Are You Prepared?

The Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh has a new resource for disaster dreparedness - a set of web pages designed to help parishes plan so they can recover from disasters, reach out to help their own parishioners and be a resource to other areas when a major disaster occurs. You can reach them through the diocesan web pages or by going directly to www.episcopalpgh.org/disasterprep

The web pages include a resources page with links to many of the disaster preparedness and coordination sites in each of the counties within the diocese, to national resources, and to materials prepared by Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) to increase disaster preparedness and responses. There is a blog page with hints on how to break down planning for disasters into manageable steps. Respond through the comments option with your own questions, successes, or hints. There is also a page with links to ERD's newsletter The Lamplighter with articles on actual disaster responses and news, and contact information for the diocesan team.

The diocesan disaster preparedness team is always looking for those who might like to join us in this planning either at the parish or diocesan level. Let us know if you are interested.
