ECW Fall 2014 Scholarships Available
The Episcopal Church Women (ECW) established the Memorial Membership Fund to aid students with educational grants. The fund was begun in 1927 to be used for two missionary training scholarships. In the 87 years of its existence, the scope of the fund has widened to include nursing, theology and other humanitarian fields of study.
Funds are raised through gifts from individuals or groups in memory of a loved one or friend. This money is invested and the interest used for the granting purposes.
Each applicant must:
- be an Episcopalian in good standing (active) in a parish in the Diocese of Pittsburgh,
- have completed one year of college or the equivalent,
- be pursuing education in either church or humanitarian related fields,
- submit an application, including a letter stating goals and need, and
- submit a reference letter from their parish priest.
To apply for the scholarship:
- FIRST: Write a letter describing your goals for your education and work afterwards.
- SECOND: Arrange for your parish priest to send a letter of reference.
- THIRD: ONLY AFTER THE LETTERS ARE DONE, complete the application form at the end of the article. DO NOT SEND THIS FORM WITHOUT THE TWO LETTERS ACCOMPANYING IT.
The Memorial Membership Committee will consider each request based on individual need and circumstances. Scholarships are completely unencumbered and may be used as needed to aid the recipient in achieving their educational goals. Each eligible applicant is able to apply once a year for three years.
The applications must be received prior to September 10, 2014. The application form is available online by clicking here.
For additional information please contact Nancy Kenny at 724-325-4769.

The Diocese of Pittsburgh's Episcopal Church Women (ECW) will be making outreach grants in the Fall.
The ECW particularly seeks to support hands-on ministries that help children, adults and families in need of assistance with food, nutrition, health care, housing, education and counseling.
The grants are primarily designed for ministries within the diocese and with the goal of even distribution across all districts. It is hoped that these small grants will enable the continuation of existing ministries on the local level. However, the ECW will continue its policy of also awarding grants to some national and international ministries such as Episcopal Relief & Development.
Click here for the grant application and submission instructions.
Applications for the Fall 2014 grants must be submitted before September 1, 2014.

Joint Nominating Committee Presents Second of Three Essays
[Episcopal Church Office of Public Affairs] The Episcopal Church Joint Nominating Committee for the Election of the Presiding Bishop (JNCPB) has issued the following information.
The Joint Nominating Committee for the Election of the Presiding Bishop (JNCPB) continues its work to prepare The Episcopal Church for the election of the 27th Presiding Bishop at General Convention next summer. The Committee publishes the second of three essays designed to begin a discussion about the election which will take place in the summer of 2015.
The second essay outlines the current roles, functions, and responsibilities of the Presiding Bishop. This first essay described the basic time-line and steps of the nominating and election process. The third essay will discuss how the constitutional/canonical role of the office has changed and evolved from being the senior bishop by consecration who presiding over meetings of the House of Bishops to the complex multifaceted position it is today.
It is the hope of the Joint Nominating Committee for the Election of the Presiding Bishop that all members of General Convention and all Episcopalians will take the time to read these brief essays to learn the importance of what we will do next summer.
The JNCPB is comprised of a lay member, a priest or deacon, and a bishop elected from each of the nine provinces of the Episcopal Church, plus two youth representatives, appointed by the President of the House of Deputies. The General Convention Deputies and bishops serve a three-year term to conclude at the close of General Convention 2015 in Salt Lake City, UT.
