Help Make Summer Arts Camp in Wilkinsburg a Reality
On May 6th, your dollar is worth more! The Neighborhood Youth Outreach Program (NYOP) is planning to expand their programming beyond the school year by offering a three week camp for the youth of Wilkinsburg. There is a huge need for affordable opportunities for youth in Wilkinsburg during the summer months when school is not in session. Due to tight funding, NYOP has been unable to offer summer programming since 2011. This year we are sure we can do it with a little help from our friends. The budget for the camp is $8,000, and any gift toward that goal will be extremely welcome. There is a special opportunity coming up that will enable you to stretch your giving dollars. NYOP is one of the organizations that you can support at the annual Day of Giving, which falls this year on Tuesday, May 6, from 6 am until 12 midnight. The Day of Giving is a resource of the Pittsburgh Foundation. Each donation (between $25 and $1000) will receive a match.
To donate, go to the Day of Giving website, pittsburghgives.org, click on the Donate Now button, and search for Neighborhood Youth Outreach Program. Before the Day of Giving, you can also go to the same website, click on Nonprofit Search and search for Neighborhood Youth Outreach Program to find out more specific details about our ministry and the important work we think we do. Of course, if you prefer, you can always donate by check, made out to NYOP and mailed to 600 Pitt St., Wilkinsburg, PA 15221.
NYOP was founded by St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Wilkinsburg in the mid-1990s. Its mission is to be a Christ-centered, arts-based community outreach program that empowers children, youth and their families to develop healthy relationships and lead responsible lives built on faith, hope and love. The diocese has actively supported this ministry since its founding. Some highlights of this year include: - NYOP children worked with installation artist Tobias Madison to develop a play-based video installation that was a part of the Carnegie International.
- NYOP has formed a partnership with the Neighborhood Academy to provide academic challenge to our older youth. The Neighborhood Academy is a faith-based, college preparatory independent school who mission is to break the generational cycle of poverty by preparing low-income youth for college and citizenship.
- The youth of NYOP went on a first-ever college field trip to Duquesne University, hosted by one of the NYOP volunteers, a student at Duquesne.
- The students performed at both Diocesan Convention and at Absalom Jones Day.
Everyone is invited to see our youth perform at their Spring Showcase on Friday, June 6, at 7:00 p.m. at St. Stephen's.

Garden Grants Awarded Great things are springing up in the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh! In the last few years, several groups in the Western Pennsylvania region have developed vegetable gardens to help meet the needs of urban and suburban residents who have limited access to fresh produce and healthy food supplies. Last year, our diocesan Social Justice and Outreach Committee (SJO) initiated a small grant program to help Episcopal parishes and organizations to create new vegetable gardens or to support and grow an already functioning garden. These grants, each a maximum $500, were intended to assist with small material needs such as: seed or plant purchases, fencing, bed construction, soil or fertilizer purchases, soil testing costs, hand tool purchases, water connections, and rain barrels. Once again in 2014, the SJO is pleased to be able to award garden grants. Because of additional funds from the St. Paul's, Mt. Lebanon, Outreach Commission and private donations to supplement the SJO budget, six garden grants this year. The committee is pleased to support new garden initiatives this year at Holy Cross, Homewood; St. Stephen's, Wilkinsburg; and St. Brendan's, Franklin Park. In addition, continuing support was granted to Sheldon Calvary Camp in Conneaut, OH, Shepherd's Wellness in Bloomfield, and Spring Street Farms in Aliquippa. Last year's awards also helped start a garden at St. David's, Peters Township. Volunteers are what make the gardens grow and prosper. If you have a green thumb, please consider volunteering at these gardens. Or, if you don't "dig" working in the soil, volunteer to package and distribute the produce. And pray for just enough rain, no bad bugs, and lots of luscious and healthy vegetables.

Dear Friends in Christ,
As you may know, Betsy and I have been active in mission for many years with Pilgrim Africa, an indigenous, non-denominational Christian relief and development organization bringing the mercy and hope of the Gospel to the people of Northeastern Uganda through education, agricultural development and public health initiatives. I blogged a great deal about Pilgrim's mission and ministry during my trip last year; to find out more, please click here.
Betsy and I are returning to Uganda from July 18th to August 4th. We will be teaming up with old friends from New York who will be leading a seminar in trauma therapy in Kampala, but we will be spending most of our time in and around Soroti, the capital of the Teso region. We usually tailor our activities to match the gifts and interests of the team who go with us.
That is where you come in!
Please think and pray about whether you have a call from the Lord to this mission field. We are particularly interested in addiction specialists, teachers, nurses and physicians (general surgery, OB/GYN, pediatrics, hygiene education, etc.), but have taken dozens of people with a bewildering variety of gifts: actors, writers, EMT's, gardeners and horticulturists, business consultants, accountants, evangelists, and folks with gifts of prayer. Please don't think you have nothing to offer.
The cost will be about $1,500 per person in addition to airfare. Some scholarship aid is available. In the past we have taken children as young as ten, though twelve is a preferred minimum age.
If you are interested, or would like more information please contact me as soon as possible through my diocesan email, dmcconnell@episcopalpgh.org.
Blessings,
