Chips and Jan Koehler Honored
The Rev. Dr. Norman E. (Chips) Koehler is retiring, effective the end of this year. On Sunday, December 22 (the day after St. Thomas' Day), St. Thomas Memorial Church will gather for a luncheon to celebrate the ministry of Fr. Chips and Jan Koehler. Originally a member of Fox Chapel Episcopal Church, he was first ordained to the vocational diaconate, after going through the diocesan ACTS program. Later, receiving a call to priesthood, he returned to Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, earning an MDiv. and was ordained at St. Andrew's, New Kensington. He has served on the diocesan staff and at Redeemer, Squirrel Hill; St. Andrew's, New Kensington; St. Barnabas, Brackenridge; St. Paul's, Kittanning, St. Mary's, Redbank; and St. Thomas, Oakmont. Before ordination, he served a 27-year career as a naval officer (including Vietnam, as naval attache to the US embassy in Greece and in the Carter White House) and as a professional fundraiser at Brown, Northwestern, CMU and Pitt. He has also served as an assisting chaplain at Presbyterian Seniorcare Home in Oakmont for nearly 15 years. St. Thomas Church plans to honor him and his wife, Jan, at a special luncheon reception after church on Sunday, December 22. His last Sunday will be on December 29. In retirement, he and Jan are hoping to travel more to visit family in Massachusetts and Maine and to visit their newest great granddaughter in Montreal more often. Everyone is welcome to this gathering to celebrate and to thank God for them! Please contact St. Thomas in Oakmont at 412-828-9680 or stthomasoakmont@verizon.net to RSVP.

Presiding Bishop's Christmas Message 2013
For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6
Isaiah pronounces these words to a people who remember the yoke of slavery laid on their shoulders. They've been waiting for this child, whose birth transforms that yoke into a mantle of authority. They are promised that this authority will continue to grow as the peaceable commonwealth is established - with justice and righteousness for all, and for ever.
This promise is spoken anew to people in every age, to those who have lived under oppression or in dark depression, to the hungry and ill and imprisoned. The birth we celebrate offers hope, in Word made flesh, who comes among us to heal and walk this way with us. The mantle of authority on his shoulders begins in the swaddling clothes of a child born in the humblest of circumstances. Yet that authority is recognized even by foreigners from far away. That mantle of authority does continue to grow, through a life offered for others, raised into new life, and passed on to new generations of fleshly God-bearers. Wherever justice and righteousness is done, that authority is growing, borne on the shoulders of the Prince of Peace.
He comes again, bearing the grace of the One whose image he wears in flesh. Seek him, sing his new song, declare his glory, and tell out the good news to all the nations: God reigns, and he is coming bearing righteousness and truth on his shoulders.
May you discover that humble authority born again on the edges of the world's notice. May that royal inheritance and authority of the stable be born in you, enliven your heart, and rest on your shoulders. Bear it abroad in peace, this year and throughout the ages.

Special Offering Planned For Holy Trinity Cathedral, Haiti
As Haiti prepares to mark the fourth anniversary of the devastating earthquake in 2010, Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has asked the Episcopal Church to remember the Diocese of Haiti on the fourth anniversary of the earthquake on January 12.
"I urge all Episcopalians to pray and give in solidarity with our largest and fastest-growing diocese," the Presiding Bishop said.
She continued, "I ask for your generosity in a special offering on Sunday, January 12 to aid the Diocese of Haiti in rebuilding Holy Trinity Cathedral in Port-au-Prince."
On January 12, 2010, a massive earthquake struck Haiti, killing more than 300,000 people, seriously injuring more than 250,000, and leaving 1.3 million homeless. An extensive number of private and public buildings were destroyed including Holy Trinity Cathedral and the affiliated Episcopal institutions in the Cathedral Complex.
Information and resources for the January 12 anniversary initiative, including bulletin inserts, are available on the "Sermons That Work" web site.

 Winter Outreach Opportunities
The Social Justice and Outreach Committee of the diocese suggests that parishes consider volunteering to prepare and deliver hot meals to the Severe Weather Emergency Shelter (SWES) operated by Operation Safety Net. During the winter months, the SWES in downtown Pittsburgh opens for the homeless on nights when the temperature falls below 25 degrees or during storm conditions. Volunteer groups are on call for specified dates, and if SWES is open, they are asked to provide and deliver a hot meal of meat, starch, and vegetables for 100 people. Typically, groups are informed at least 48 hours in advance if the SWES is to be open. Additional details and dates can be obtained from Stephanie Chiappini (primary contact) at schiappini@pmhs.org or 412-246-2986.
Great youth activity: In addition, SWES needs breakfast bags to pass out as the guests exit the shelter in the mornings. These bags should contain a serving of real fruit juice, 1-2 energy or cereal bars, dried fruit such as raisins, and possibly a small bottle of water, hand wipe packet, candy, or packaged crackers or cookies. Putting these bags together is a great youth activity. The bags can be delivered with the meal, or can be dropped off at the South Side office of Operation Safety Net at 249 South Ninth Street, 3rd Floor, Trail Lane Apartments. Call 412-246-2980 for more information. The requested number of bags is 100. |
