Episcopal Workday at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank
Join fellow Episcopalians from across the Diocese at our next volunteer workday at the Repack Center of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. We'll be working in the Repack Center at GPCFB's main Duquesne warehouse facility (1 North Linden St, Duquesne, PA 15110) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 9. We'll assist the GPCFB repack team by inspecting, sorting, and repacking donated or purchased groceries. The exact project will depend on their inventory at the time. In the past we've had most enjoyable times repacking food ranging from cereals to oranges. GPCFB serves as a central repository for over 350 local food pantries and distribution centers across 11 counties in southwestern Pennsylvania. Because it works with such large volumes in its certified green facility, GPCFB's operations are efficient, economical and impressive.
If you would like to get in the Thanksgiving spirit by volunteering for this rewarding activity sponsored by the diocesan Social Justice and Outreach Committee, contact Jerry Stephenson (JJmestephenson@verizon.net or 412-367-1032) by November 4 to reserve your slot. Volunteers must be 12 years of age or older and be able to stand for two or more consecutive hours. We expect the 40 available slots to be reserved quickly.

Fifty Years Later: The State of Racism in America
Live, free webcast on November 15
The Episcopal Church will devote two days to the exploration of a critical topic: Fifty Years Later: The State of Racism in America.
This year marks significant landmark anniversaries in the struggle to end discrimination, provide equal rights and combat racism: the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, the 50th anniversary of the pivotal March on Washington, the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Medgar Evers, the 100th birthday of Rosa Parks. In 1964 the Civil Rights Act was signed into law.
On November 15, The Episcopal Church will host and produce the 90-minute live forum in collaboration with the Diocese of Mississippi. The forum will be held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral in Jackson beginning at 2 p.m. Eastern.
There is no fee to view this live forum. Access is available through the Episcopal Church website at www.episcopalchurch.org/page/state-racism.
The forum will be moderated by well-known journalist and PBS commentator Ray Suarez. Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori will present the keynote address.
The forum will begin with a thought-provoking video that explores the roots of the anti-racism movement in America. The video features the stories of leaders active in the civil rights movement in Mississippi, their reflections on pre-Civil Rights Era injustices and where they see hope for the future.
Two panel discussions will focus on main themes: Racism in America today - why does it persist? and Racism in America's future - where is there hope for change?

New Advent Meditations from Forward Movement
Forward Movement is pleased to announce the release of From the Holly Jolly to the Holy: Reclaiming the Sacred During Advent and Christmas by Jim Rosenthal.
The holiness of Advent and Christmas often gets lost in the busyness of the season. This year, explore Advent and Christmas through the lens of St. Nicholas and scripture, and find the holy in the midst of the secular traditions. Each day during Advent, From the Holly Jolly to the Holy will help you to reclaim this time as sacred and joy-filled.
"St. Nicholas' story can help unleash within us that holy virtue of bringing new life and new hope to people who come our way," Rosenthal explains. "As we anticipate the joy of Advent and journey through Christmas and Epiphany, we have a chance to recapture the holy and reclaim traditions, all to give glory to the blessed Christ Child."
The Rev. Canon Dr. Jim Rosenthal is the president of the UK/USA St. Nicholas Society. He is retired and now lives in a village called St Nicholas at Wade, Kent, near Canterbury, where he also serves as the parish priest of St. Nicholas Church. Originally from Chicago, Rosenthal served as communications officer of the Anglican Communion for 19 years and has visited more than 70 countries. He co-authored St. Nicholas: A Closer Look at Christmas, published by Thomas Nelson USA. He dons the robes of Bishop Nicholas in many locations every year but his favorite is the annual celebration in Canterbury, walking alongside the former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams.
Forward Movement will grant permission to use up to three excerpts from our Advent books, and most of our other resources, in parish newsletters, websites, etc. Please indicate that it was used with permission by Forward Movement. A link to www.forwardmovement.org would be most welcome!
