New Kensington Property Returned to Diocese

The ACNA congregation at St. Andrew's, New Kensington, has informed the diocese that it will move voluntarily to a new place of worship by the end of July.  St. Andrew's is joining several other properties that have been returned to the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh in recent years after civil courts affirmed the diocese as the rightful owner.  The transition in New Kensington is progressing smoothly and on amicable terms.

Bishop McConnell has appointed the Rev. Dr. Norman "Chips" Koehler and Alice Ramser to lead diocesan efforts to identify and meet the spiritual and pastoral needs of all present or former members of St. Andrew's who wish to remain Episcopalian.  Both have a long association with the parish and come to this task through the good graces and support of St. Thomas, Oakmont.  No decision on the future for St. Andrew's will be made until there is adequate time for assessment.

Father Koehler will celebrate the Eucharist at St. Andrew's for several Sundays, beginning on July 28 at 9:30 a.m.  On that first Sunday, an introductory meeting will follow for all who are interested.  The church is located at 1090 Edgewood Road, New Kensington, PA 15068.  All are welcome.

ECW

The Diocese of Pittsburgh's Episcopal Church Women (ECW) will be making outreach grants in the Fall.

The ECW particularly seeks to support "hands-on-ministries" that help children, adults and families in need of assistance with food, nutrition, health care, housing, education and counseling.

The grants are primarily designed for ministries within the diocese and with the goal of even distribution across all districts. It is hoped that these small grants will enable the continuation of existing ministries on the local level. However, the ECW will continue its policy of also awarding grants to some national and international ministries such as Episcopal Relief & Development.

Click here for the grant application and submission instructions.

Applications for the Fall 2013 grants must be submitted before September 1st.

The ECW established the Memorial Membership Fund to aid students with educational grants. The fund was begun in 1927 to be used for two missionary training scholarships. In the 85 years of its existence, the scope of the fund has widened to include nursing, theology and other humanitarian fields of study.

Funds are raised through gifts from individuals or groups in memory of a loved one or friend. This money is invested and the interest used for the granting purposes.

Each applicant must:

  • be an Episcopalian in good standing (active) in a parish in the Diocese of Pittsburgh,
  • have completed one year of college or the equivalent,
  • be pursuing education in either church or humanitarian related fields,
  • submit an application, including a letter stating goals and need, and
  • submit a reference letter from their parish priest.
  • The Memorial Membership Committee will consider each request based on individual need and circumstances. Scholarships are completely unencumbered and may be used as needed to aid the recipient in achieving their educational goals. Each eligible applicant is able to apply once a year for three years.

The applications must be received prior to September 1, 2013. The application form is available online by clicking here.

The third phase of the dialogues will take place throughout the diocese in August and September. The only limitation on the number of participants will be the need for there to be a roughly equal number who come at this controversy from each side.  Clearly a large pool of volunteers is needed on both sides of the question.

The dialogues will be held on three Saturdays between early August and September 14. If you have signed up, you will be contacted with specifics when the sites and dates are finalized. If you are unavailable on Saturday but are available on Sunday between 2 and 6 p.m., contact Dana Phillips at dphillips@episcopalpgh.org about your availability.

To volunteer to take part in the summer dialogues, click this link. Some have indicated that they would like to participate in the dialogues but either cannot or prefer not to enter their information online.  In order to facilitate everyone's participation, a paper form (click here) is available.
