2014 School Year Begins

On Thursday August 28, 81 enthusiastic young men arrived at our Federal Hill school for the start of the 2014 school year, the largest student body in the Academy's history.  Our 30 new 6th grade students come to us from 24 schools throughout Baltimore City. We welcome back longtime Academy faculty member Joe Brune who is returning to teach 8th grade English, and new faculty members Jarrel Garner (Music), Jessica Loria (Assistant Director Graduate Support),  and Caroline Mills (Latin and Social Studies).

Welcome new 6th grade students!
Mass of the Holy Spirit

The Jesuit tradition of beginning each academic year with the Mass of the Holy Spirit dates back to the 16th century.  The Academy celebrated this Mass today at the site of our founding, Saint Ignatius Church led by our founding President Fr. Bill Watters, S.J.  The first reading from Sirach was particularly appropriate:

If you wish, you can be taught;

if you apply yourself, you will be shrewd.

If you are willing to listen, you will learn;

if you give heed, you will be wise.

During the homily, Fr. Watters asked the students to share their reflections on the readings among themselves, and then invited them to share with the community, and ended by inviting students to join him in blessing the faculty.  It was a particular joy to have music provided by alumnus Tariq al Sabir '07, a senior at the Peabody Conservatory.

Academy students explore new opportunities

This summer brought a myriad of new learning opportunities for some of our students.  In June, recent graduates Deondre, Tyree and Vincent had an amazing outdoor learning experience at the Teton Science Camps in Jackson, Wyoming where they learned about the natural world and the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Our deepest thanks to long-time supporters A.C. and Penney Hubbard for once again making this possible for our boys.

Rising 8th grade students Aaron, Kenneth, Khalil and Jerry loved their two weeks at i2 Camp at Bryn Mawr school where they engaged in fascinating STEM experiential learning projects like building a moon colony. designing model viruses, extracting DNA and engineering a popsicle stick chain reaction. Thanks to our friends at Schools That Can for providing these scholarships.

Two rising 8th grade students spent five weeks in the summer program at Phillips Exeter Academy, a top-rated independent boarding school. Pujan and Belou both enrolled in the Problem Solving cluster of classes that included robotics, programming and mathematical modeling. Aside from their academic gains, both boys share that they gained confidence navigating the boarding school experience.  Thank you Phillips Exeter!!
