WAY TO GO OAK GROVE!!!! Despite the very cold and blustery weather, we had
334 walkers on Georgia Walk to School Day!!! Thanks to all those kids and parents
who got out to walk and compete in the Classroom Challenge. And thanks to all those parent volunteers who braved the cold to help out!
Congratulations to Ms. Arcidiacono's class for coming in 1st place, Ms. Bolsen's class for 2nd place and Ms. Boykins' class for 3rd place!
Ms. Arcidiacono's class also received the Golden Shoe Trophy, which they will keep for a week. Each week we will tally the walkers to see which class has the highest percentage of walkers and that class will be awarded the Golden Shoe Trophy to display proudly until the next week. There will also be a sign-up sheet in the lobby each week for the 4th and 5th grade band and strings and 5th grade patrol children who walk so they can be counted too.
So get out and walk and/or bike each week! Remember to be safe and be seen!

 Lost and Found
As of Wednesday, March 6th, there were only 22 jackets in Lost and Found. This is the lowest number to dat after a "clean out." Six of the jackets have the GAP logo on the front.
Be sure to check if you are missing a jacket! No clean out is scheduled yet, given the low inventory. Keep labeling and checking. |

Safety Some of you have been wondering about the locked gate. Mr. Joe Burge, DeKalb County School's Safety Officer, visited OGE last week and found cars parked in the fire lane on the side of the building, close to the trailers, and behind the gym. Apparently, the parked cars were in violation of the Fire Marshall guidelines, and we were advised to avoid parking in these areas so that emergency vehicles have immediate access. This compliance limits parking for the staff and visitors.
I asked Mr. Burge to come to OGE Wednesday to discuss the parking issues and to talk to the faculty about safety. He will walk the building with me to further check safety compliance. (Better he than the official Fire Marshall.) We will keep you up to date about his findings.
Third Grade Rocks! On Thursday, February 28th, we had 3rd Grade Rocks Day! Each teacher planned a hands-on activity that taught the children about the types of rocks and how they are formed. The students participated in stations that allowed them to identify rocks by their attributes. By using sand, water, and Plaster of Paris, the students created their own sedimentary rocks in plastic cups. After creating a "pet rock" out of clay, the students had to identify the rock and write about where it would be found. During the "Sweet Rock Cycle", the students turned minerals into rocks and watched as they went through the rock cycle from metamorphic to sedimentary to igneous. The children were invited to decorate a shirt for the fun day. They looked like rock stars! Students learned about the different types of rocks in hands-on ways that were meaningful and fun.
Second Grade Music Program Kudos to the second grade for a wonderful music program entitled "Squirm: A Wiggly, Giggly, Squiggly Musical." The students knew all the words to the songs and their individual presentations. Such a happy and enthusiastic group. A huge THANK YOU to Ms. Card for such a fine job. Thank you Volunteers, the props and costumes really added the feel of a Broadway Production.
Visit by the State Department of Education Tuesday Ms. Diana Baird, Evaluator of the new Teacher Evaluation Program, visited to observe in a classroom to see how well our evaluations matched. The results were almost a perfect match. Ms. Baird was so impressed with OGE; she loved the student work displayed and felt the faculty and staff were great as they worked well together and with the students. I'm not surprised as this is quite the quality school.
