Recycling Phase 1: Styrofoam Lunchroom Trays!
YES, it's true, we have started recycling those pesky styrofoam lunchroom trays. Thank you to our wonderful 5th grade volunteers. They are doing a fantastic job gathering and storing the trays for recycling. We hope to expand to 4th grade in the next week or so. A HUGE thank you to the Publix at Shamrock Plaza. The General Manager, Jean Claude, has graciously agreed accept our styrofoam recycling. This will save us a weekly trip to Lithonia to Georgia's only recycling agency. We encourage ALL parents and staff to collect their own styrofoam cups, veggie/meat trays, egg cartons, etc., that has the #6 symbol on the bottom, and take them to Shamrock or Toco Hills Publix and place them in the large green bins out at the front of their store. Congratulations to Elise T.!
Elise won Grand Prize in the Elementary Division of the DeKalb County Regional Science Fair 2013. Her project was an investigation entitled "How Does Global Warming Affect the Growth of Radishes". Her conclusion was that global warming has a negative effect on the growth of radishes. Elise is an Oak Grove 5th grader in Ms. Hopkins' class. We are so impressed with this win. Way to go Elise! |

Principal Search & Parent Survey
The OGE PTA, Foundation and School Council leadership had a very positive meeting with Area Superintendent Cynthia Bricston. She understands that Oak Grove needs a uniquely qualified Principal and will, therefore, undertake a very careful search. In the meantime, we are very fortunate to have Mrs. Toni Fallon as our highly qualified Interim Principal. She will be here until the end of the school year.
At Mrs. Bricston's suggestion, we prepared a parent survey that will be submitted to the county for consideration during the search. Please complete the survey (one time per family), by clicking on the link below:
Your participation will provide further evidence of our community's commitment to our children, teachers and ongoing tradition of excellence.
The teachers will be receiving a survey from the county, and Dr. Neely indicated that Mrs. Bricston will be arranging meetings to get teacher input. In addition, Dr. Neely provided a list of current Oak Grove initiatives that our new Principal will be responsible for and Mrs. Bricston said that she will consider them in the search.

 Farm-to-School Day: Strawberries
Oak Grove's Farm to School Day is Wednesday, March 6th, and the item is local STRAWBERRIES!
Did you know?
Fresh juice from sieved strawberry pulp has a cooling effect on feverish patients. For a cooling and purifying drink, either pour water on crushed berries or chop the berries roughly and whirl in a blender with a little water.
Don't miss this sweet treat either with the school lunch, as an a-la-carte item for $.75, or packed in lunch brought from home. Contact Rebecca Evans at TheEvanses@gmail.com if you'd like to come give out stickers to the kids during lunch! |
More Thanks to Oak Grove School Community
I was truly so moved to read of the generous donations from the Oak Grove families for members of Mountain View Personal Home Care facility. A member of our family lives there and your generosity toward others in our community who are less fortunate is so appreciated. The folks at Mountain View are really good people. Thank you again on behalf of our family.
