dcscUpdate On DeKalb County School System Events
reprinted from Lakeside High PTSA newsletter

The Dekalb County School System remains on Accredited Probation status until December 31, 2013. To read the letter SACS, the accrediting agency, sent to the school system,

click here. To read the Review Team Report, click here. You may send information and thoughts to Dr. Elgart (President of SACS) at melgart@advanc-ed.org. You can also email contactus@advanc-ed.org. At the recent Emory LaVista Parent Council, members of the state legislature assured parents that should DCSD lose accreditation at some point, the DeKalb legislators would request a waiver (previously done for Clayton County) so college bound students would not lose HOPE scholarship eligibility.

The Members of the DeKalb County BOE are scheduled to appear before the State Board of Education again on Thursday, February 21 to resume the hearing to present evidence as to why the State Board should not recommend to the Governor that he suspend the Members of the DeKalb County BOE. They previously met January 17th. That meeting can be viewed here. At a called meeting last Friday, Feb. 1st, the DeKalb BOE voted to retain a new law firm to represent them in connection with the State Board of Education hearing and/or related proceedings or actions. The vote was 7 Yes, 1 No (Nancy Jester), 1 Absent (Orson). To view the agreement, click here.

If you would like to provide a statement for the State Board to consider, you can email it to either Justin Pauly at jpauly@gadoe.org or Brenda Turner at brturner@doe.k12.ga.us. State Representative Scott Holcomb is also soliciting input. To view his web site, click here. You may email him at scott@repscottholcomb.com. At the recent Emory LaVista Parent Council meeting, legislators in attendance also encouraged parents to contact Governor Deal (use the link or by mail at Governor Deal, State Capitol, Atlanta, GA 30038) to share your recommendations and names of individuals you would recommend for the DeKalb BOE should he choose to remove Board members. You may also contact members of the State Board of Education to share your thoughts.

It's that time of year again-time to put your art talent to work for the clean air cause. This year's theme: Leading the Way for Cleaner Air!

How can we Lead the Way for Clean Air? What does leading look like? How can a regular person lead other people to care about the air? Create a comic strip about actions kids can take to lead the way in reducing air pollution. Be creative and have fun! Your cartoon should include one or more of the following actions: riding the bus, walking, biking, public transit, carpooling, combining car trips, or not idling.

Click here to visit the Clean Air Campaign web site.  Look for the "Comic Strip Challenge" section.  There is a link at the end of the section to download the challenge guidelines and entry form.  Deadline is March 8th.
