May Lyme Awareness Month

The Lyme Disease Association, Inc. (LDA) is kicking off Lyme awareness month with a bang! Below is a quick summary of events LDA has done or is planning to do to educate others about the science and government policies surrounding Lyme disease.

Lyme & Other Tick-Borne Diseases: Science, Research & Myth 

 

Presented at the University of Minnesota Conference Center, St. Paul, MN, on Saturday/Sunday, June 1 & 2, 2013.  

 

This year's Co-Chairs are Brian Fallon, MD from the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, NY, and RW Stich, PhD from the University of Missouri. 11.0 CME credits will be available for physicians.

  

World reknown researchers will discuss connections between Lyme and Alzheimer's, biomarkers, persistence strategies of the Lyme bacteria, a potential new technology for Lyme testing using carbon nanotubes, and will show live imaging  studies of disseminated spirochetes. Ticks and other tick-borne diseases will be presented and doctors will talk about diagnostic and treatment protocols and clinical decision-making.

Preparing for the peak of the 2013 tick season, a diverse team of experienced leaders recently joined forces in New Jersey to promote the annual May Lyme Disease Awareness Month campaign.  In a press conference packed with TV, radio, and print media, Congressman Chris Smith (NJ-4) spoke about his federal Lyme bills (HR 610, HR 611) to establish a federal tick-borne diseases advisory committee and to provide much needed funding for Lyme and other tick-borne diseases research to combat their continuing spread throughout the country. Also in attendance were Jim Occi, MA, MS, from University of Medicine & Dentistry NJ, a member of LDA's Scientific & Professional Advisory Board; Pat Smith, LDA President; Michael Meddis, MPH, Monmouth County Public Health Coordinator and George Newberry, Wall Township Committeeman and Former Mayor. Lyme patients and volunteer patient advocates also attended.

Ridgefield Lyme Task Force Forum
2013-05 Ridgefield Seminar

On Tuesday, May 14th, 2013 in Danbury, CT the Ridgefield Lyme Disease Task Force will present a Lyme Disease Seminar & Health Fair;Visonaries in Testing, Treatment, Research & Advocacyin their continuing effort to decrease the prevalence of Lyme and other tick borne diseases through awareness, education, tick remediation and public policy advocacy. This year's program features experts in the fields of tick borne disease diagnostics, treatment and patient advocacy.  Speakers include Raphael B. Stricker, MD; Nick Harris, PhD, ABMLI and Pat Smith, President, Lyme Disease Association, Inc.  The Western Connecticut State University is host to the program and admission is free.

LDA's 1st Annual Virtual Walk - Sign Up Today!
Sneakers Our main goals during the walk are to: Raise Money for Lyme and Tick Borne Diseases (TBD) Research, Education Programs and LymeAid 4 Kids.  In addition, join us in public support of patients with Lyme and TBDs.  The First Place Walker will be the person who can go the furthest distance through sponsorship. Virtual miles will be given for the amount of donations the walkers accumulate.

Vermont Tick The LDA is pleased to announce the publication in the journal Northeastern Naturalist of new research which helps to determine the types of ticks, percent of each type found, and what percent of deer ticks carry Borrelia burgdorferi in areas of the Upper Connecticut River Valley of Vermont. This study will most likely lead to further studies in Vermont of tick populations and other diseases they carry, says Alan Giese, PhD Lyndon State College,VT, the investigator who received an LDA grant for the project.

Lyme Awareness Rallies
NY Lyme Rally For Lyme Awareness month there are a number of rallies throughout the country. The LDA hopes the organizers and participants are able to raise awareness for Lyme disease through these efforts.
