LDA: Credibility, Dependability, Success  

 

All Volunteer Lyme Disease Association (LDA):

      

Credibility: Guidestar Exchange Member, Combined Federal Campaign 2012

 

Financial accountability: 990s and other information on Guidestar, grants and activities listed on LDA website, over time, approximately 96% of funds have gone to programs!

 

Partnerships: Environmental Protection Agency PESP Partner, Columbia University 11 year joint CME conference partner, Rotary, others see LDA website

 

Success: 27 peer review journal publications on science LDA has funded, 13 scientific conferences for physicians to be educated, ~$1/4 million dollars for children without insurance for Lyme, awarded 85 research grants & 83 educational grants, helped author and pass numerous state Lyme legislation, federal appropriations legislation, secured federal DC Lyme hearing, met with CDC Vector-Borne Disease Division in Colorado, chronic Lyme billboard on Times Square, nationwide doctor referral system online, free info & brochures (~2M distributed)

New LDA Lyme Research Projects in 2012

The results of the following cutting-edge research projects funded in 2012 by LDA may help patients get definitively diagnosed in a timely fashion and thus get more effective & timely treatment.

 

(1) Looking for biomarkers for Lyme (Columbia University).

 

(2) Looking to correlate a normal genetic variance in the population with increased incidence of chronic/long-term Lyme (Shenandoah University School of Pharmacy).

 

(3) Continuing research on genetic aspects of the microbe that causes Lyme  

(New Jersey Medical School, UMDNJ).


Other LDA Lyme Programs in 2012

LDA was instrumental in securing and testifying before the Lyme disease hearing of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee Global Health & Human Rights Subcommittee in Washington DC in July. LDA held its 13th annual scientific conference with continuing medical education for physicians in September. LDA had a billboard in Times Square on chronic Lyme May through July and had an April Lyme pubic education forum (see picture below). Throughout the year, LDA provided funds for children with no Lyme insurance to get help.

ABOUT THE LDA: 

 

The LDA is an all-volunteer national nonprofit, 501 (c) (3), (has never had employees), dedicated to Lyme disease education, prevention, raising monies for research, and patient support. It has been accepted into the 2012 Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) which recognizes it as an approved charity for federal workplace giving. It is also a Guidestar.org exchange member, recognized for its transparency in operations. LDA is an Environmental Protection Agency PESP Partner and offers LymeAid 4 Kids program for children without insurance coverage.

 

LDA-funded research has been acknowledged in 27 peer review journals to date, and LDA has presented its 13th Lyme & Tick-Borne Diseases scientific conference jointly sponsored by Columbia University in Philadelphia in 2012. The faculty was comprised of national and international researchers in the field of tick-borne diseases and attendees did receive Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits. LDA is associated with 45 Lyme organizations nationwide a loose network called LDAnet, with LDA as the umbrella organization. They are working together to make a difference for Lyme patients. In 2012, LDA developed an electronic billboard ad featured in Times Square, promoting the awareness of chronic Lyme disease throughout the world.
