General Assembly, Day 8

Lake Huron Friends,

The afternoon and evening sessions of committee reports for Friday revolved around issues of divestment - from fossil fuel companies and the Middle East.  After much debate, the GA asked the Mission Responsibility Through Investment Committee to study the issue of the fossil fuel companies for the next GA.  Then, following a lengthy debate that spilled over into the evening session, the GA voted by a very narrow margin of 310-303 to approve divesting from several corporations for their sales of non-peaceful equipment to Israel.  The Assembly was deeply divided on this issue and found it to be one of the most complex they dealt with. As of 10:30 PM, the GA was still finishing up work on actions relating to international issues and the remaining polity issues from that committee. Surely, the Stated Clerk will enjoy that and can report on anything interesting that comes from that.

This will be the last GA report as Saturday morning is used for closing worship and approving the financial implications of the actions that the GA took during the Assembly.  And then our committed but very tired commissioners can return home with our thanks.

Following are items that the PC(USA) has released regarding recent decisions.
