General Assembly, Day 5

Lake Huron Friends,

Yesterday the committees of the General Assembly concluded their business and prepared their reposts which will be considered by the entire body beginning in about an hour when the assembly reconvenes. One change in procedure this year is that many items will be brought on consent agendas. Hopefully this will help speed up the reporting process.

The General Assembly News, our daily paper, has reported the results of the work of several committees. These are items which are being recommended but are not yet considered by the assembly.

  • The Middle East Issues Committee will recommend that the Presbyterian Church [USA] divest from Caterpillar, Inc, Hewlett-Packard and Motorola Solutions.
  • The Committee on Civil Unions and Marriage Issues will recommend that pastors be granted discretion to perform same-gender marriages in civil jurisdictions where they are legal.  The recommendations carefully protect individual pastors' freedom of conscience about who they will marry.
  • The Mid Council Commission II will recommend a process which will reduce the number of Synods from 17 to 10-12.
These are but a few of the issues these three committees will bring to the body. Each of the committees will bring important recommendations. The recommendations I have shared with you have not been debated nor decided by the Assembly. I will send additional reports as these and other items of significance and decided by the Assembly.

In Christ,

Jim Browne, Interim General Presbyter and

Ted McCulloch, Stated Clerk
